Utterly bizarre thing to do, unless its for a documentary only.
Just not right. Well caught though.

They posted the reasons a while back on their Facebook page, they wanted to remove the Russian markings out of solidarity with Ukraine.capercaillie wrote: ↑Thu 16 Jun 2022, 3:44 pmUtterly bizarre thing to do, unless its for a documentary only.

Fair enough, the whole myriad of Eastern European nations supporting Ukraine were not considered ahead of marking it up as the wrong variant, but there we are.Mike wrote: ↑Fri 17 Jun 2022, 2:38 amThey posted the reasons a while back on their Facebook page, they wanted to remove the Russian markings out of solidarity with Ukraine.capercaillie wrote: ↑Thu 16 Jun 2022, 3:44 pmUtterly bizarre thing to do, unless its for a documentary only.

Re: LN-MIG Returns to Norwich.
Who says they haven't considered those options? It's their aircraft, they can paint it up however they like and I think it is interesting to see this option on a flyer for once, even if it is the wrong variant.
Re: LN-MIG Returns to Norwich.
Yes, they absolutely can, but it still looks bizarre (and completely wrong).

The funny thing is that the markings were just about the only thing Russian about the aircraft, as it is a Polish type, operating with the Norwegian Historic Squadron. Getting the most accurate markings for that particular airframe on to an aircraft may be great for museum/conservation purposes but these guys also will have to sell it as an act to an airshow crowd. I think it is smart of them to pick a scheme that still links back to the MiG-15's Korean War history but also draws the attention away from the Russian side of things and provides the opportunity to shine some light on No Kum-sok's defection in 1953.
Anyway, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one Blackbird. I hope you don't mind.

No problem at all!! I took a fair few photos of it at Duxford on Saturday.

What a frankly bizarre set of markings to replace them with.....my brain can't compute the absurd logic behind itMike wrote: ↑Fri 17 Jun 2022, 2:38 amThey posted the reasons a while back on their Facebook page, they wanted to remove the Russian markings out of solidarity with Ukraine.capercaillie wrote: ↑Thu 16 Jun 2022, 3:44 pmUtterly bizarre thing to do, unless its for a documentary only.

Given as said, its a Polish airframe, they could have just put it back into its native Polish scheme, or even just replaced the red stars with some Ukrainian flags, which might have been even more appropriate.
Re: LN-MIG Returns to Norwich.
It was mentioned in the commentary at Duxford at the weekend that they did consider Polish markings, but there are already two examples flying in a Poland in that scheme.
I rather like the scheme they've chosen, historically accurate for a MiG (albeit a single-seater), tells an interesting story, and a delicious two fingers up to the Russians.

I'm reminded - as often happens - of this classic line:

I personally like the US markings and agree it's neat to see.

Re: LN-MIG Returns to Norwich.
There is a variant where someone is enthusiastically berating a pilot about the errors in his Spitfire's paintscheme. Said pilot replies: "What colour is YOUR Spitfire then?" It may be related to Spencer Flack's comment and/or misremembered by me of course....
