I have just booked a day return flight for the day of the display. Can anyone please tell me the best place to see and photograph it and how to get there?

if you are early enough there is usually a static display immediately S of the passenger terminal walk out and follow the fence round (small entry fee) I think it also continues after the display.

otherwise airport bus 15 to St Helier, St Andrews Park bus stop will drop you about halfway along St Aubin's Bay where the display is centred. I don't think anyone is allowed on the beach or over to Elizabeth Castle during the display any more.

The bus back can be extremely slow as they close the seafront road and all the car traffic uses the top road.

it's a nice walk from just before Red Houses along the old railway then round the bay.

I thought I'd read there wasn't a static display at the airport this year. But I can't find where I might have seen that, so don't take it as gospel

I don't think there was one last year (although I didn't go anyway), website currently says "still to be confirmed" for this year. I'm flying out on the Wednesday so hope they do open up the static - otherwise I'll just have a day spotting by the fence and hopefully catch some late arrivals.

Although this year’s air display will not include static displays at Jersey Airport and West Park in St Helier, Mr Higgins said he hoped that this aspect of the event would return in 2023.

St Aubin's Bay will be facing into the sun during the display, there are higher vantage / photographic points at either end of the bay although the East End has all the harbour in the way

This article mentions a Corsair (F-AZEG pictured but no indication if this is the aircraft in question). Not on the official list yet (although it does list the RR Mustang twice, so could have been left off in error). Also mentions ongoing discussions regarding several military assets. No mention of the SwAFHF :(, but at least they still have Jersey listed as TBD on their schedule.

Final lineup:
  • S260
  • Bronco
  • Mustang (Rolls-Royce)
  • Catalina
  • P-47
  • Corsair
  • Chinook
  • BBMF
  • AeroSparx
  • Flamants
  • Spitfire (Rolls-Royce)
  • Red Arrows
Really, really underwhelming compared to previous runnings. I'm regretting booking my flights in advance. There again, looking at the forecast it's probably going to be a washout anyway...

Re: Jersey International Air Display 2022

THIS week’s Jersey International Air Display could be the Island’s last, unless more businesses and organisations are prepared to step up and help cover the costs of the event, its organiser has warned.

The display, which was first staged in 1952, will be missing several of its usual features this year as a result of a budget shortfall, and the outlook for 2023 appears bleak if financial difficulty persists.

Organiser Mike Higgins said that he had a budget of around £120,000 for this year’s event, around £80,000 lower than the 2021 pool of funds, after the late withdrawal of a potential major sponsor.

As a result of the funding challenges, there will be no static display at Jersey Airport this year and no programme will be printed, while the Lower Park will not host the usual food fair or range of vehicles and other attractions.

Mr Higgins said: ‘We need donations to ensure that we can continue next year and in the years ahead. Without money to spend we won’t be able to do anything.

‘They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there’s also no such thing as a free air display – the fact that there’s no charge for spectators does not mean owners or operators will bring their planes here for nothing, or that fuel is free, or that providing a safety infrastructure, or hotel rooms and cars for exhibitors, can be done without cost.’

In addition to having a significantly reduced income to draw on in staging the 2022 event this Thursday, caused by some sponsorship pledges not materialising as expected, Mr Higgins said he was also contending with increased costs, many of which had been sparked by the war in Ukraine.

A rise of almost 50% in the price of aviation fuel over the past year is a prime reason that this year’s event will not feature any jet aeroplanes, with the exception of the RAF Red Arrows. The display will still boast a wide range of aircraft, including the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Chinook helicopters, the AeroSPARX formation gliding team and an international array of fighter planes that took part in the Second World War and subsequent military conflicts.

Mr Higgins acknowledged support from the government and Ports of Jersey in staging the event, with a ‘slight increase’ in the government’s contribution compared to 2021, but appealed for other organisations and businesses to do their bit.

He said: ‘It’s one of the busiest weeks of the year for tourism – the hotels are full, and all the restaurants along the bay will be packed, and yet many of the businesses who’ll benefit won’t be contributing anything.

‘When I’m trying to source hotel rooms for exhibitors and volunteers, I’m told that it’s the busiest week of the year… when the air display is the reason for that.’

Mr Higgins said he was proud that the event was free for spectators, especially at a time when many families were struggling to make ends meet, and said that he hoped those watching would make use of the Lower Park as a base for picnics with a prime view.

Having stood down as a St Helier Deputy this summer after 14 years in the States Assembly, Mr Higgins said he wanted to devote more time to his work on the air display. He previously took a fee to cover the time he spent organising the event, but said that would not be the case this year.

‘I want to see it continue, and I’ve always said that I’ll stop when I’m carried out in a box, but at some point it may be necessary to ask whether it’s worth it,’ he said.

Mr Higgins said that he hoped those willing to support the air display would contact him by emailing m.r.higgins@live.com, or calling 873956.

Unfortunately I feel the same way, took the chance and booked months back but have now Cancelled my flights as that line up and the weather forecast are hardy inspiring. Hats off to the organisers for what they’ve achieved over the years, had some really great days there but looking at other posts today as well, I fear we may be about to lose another regular from the calendar. Anyways good old BA have given me a voucher valid for 12 months and even Easyjet have refunded my APD - hopefully it will survive, they find the sponsorship required and the weather gods will be kinder next year.

I was just looking at my glossy 2019 Programme, the centre spread of which is a B-52 (which was cancelled)

I suppose for a Jersey resident it's the only chance to see the RAF participants even though they are routine on mainland UK

It flew at Bournemouth last weekend, unless it's broken again since

P-47 was fine at Bournemouth, but as usual you can never guarantee that the programme contents will even be able to get airborne in this weeks wind & rain.
Additionally there is the issue of serviceability on the older aircraft, including the 2022 underwhelming Red Arrows c/w their dodgy reliability vintage aircraft. Nobody will be more surprised than me if firstly they get 7 smoking jets in the sky over the Channel Islands & then finish the whole routine with 7 jets!

if anyone (like me) cannot get a flight refund / change there are some very good Occupation sites to visit. Not the commercialised Jersey War Tunnels but the concrete defences all around the coast. There were several opened by the CIOS although it's a small volunteer led thing and they may not be open.

I'm planning on visiting the Occupation Tapestry too

BBMF will probably cancel aswell looking at the winds which are above their operating parameters or at least the Lancasters
