Tasman Glacier New Zealand

Post by Wbirdnut »

Been on the bucket list since I was really young, to ski the Tasman Glacier,
the stars aligned as another good mate was keen as well, great snow year
and even better the day we scored!

Image

Was told the days of ski planes operating are numbered of the three companies
operating on the day only one had a ski plane.

Flew in MCK up onto the glacier back in 2004. One of the most memorable flights I have ever experienced, especially the tactical approach and landing upon return!
Good to see she is still plying her trade, a wonderful aircraft.

Yep just a stunning part of the world, was told the ski plane days are numbered,
only one operator now, using this Pilatus, all the other operators use Helicopters.

Can’t be anywhere near as much fun as the ski-planes?
If my memory is correct there were two PC-6’s and two Cessna 180’s back in’04.
That is such a shame if they are being replaced, glad I took the chance when I was there.

Thanks for posting. Landed on the glacier in 1986, when my wife and I were in NZ for our honeymoon. I think it was a Cessna 185 that took us up there, operated by Mount Cook AL. Also took a flight down Milford Sound with the same operator and type of aircraft.
Cheers,

George
