Aircraft Illustrated — April 2009

Post by Ben Dunnell »

The April issue of Aircraft comes out on 13 March, but here's a preview of what's coming up...

AIRSHOWS 2009 — FREE SUPPLEMENT
Free with the April issue is our Airshows 2009 supplement, featuring full calendars for UK and overseas events, previews of some of the big British shows — and an exclusive look back to the world's first ever airshow at Reims 100 years ago by the organiser of this year's centennial celebration, Col Pierre-Alain Antoine.

So you want to be a display pilot?
Continuing our airshow theme, the CAA's Robb Metcalfe outlines some of the essentials for the would-be display pilot.

Airshow Legends — Air Tattoo: How it all began
Part One of a major and revealing new series. As preparations for this year's Royal International Air Tattoo move ahead, Aircraft looks back at the first two Air Tattoos at North Weald in 1971-72, the first shows to bear that famous name. It was a far cry from Fairford... PLUS! Win RIAT 2009 tickets.

Breitling precision
It's going to be a busy season for the Breitling Jet Team, the world's largest civilian jet aerobatic outfit. Henri-Pierre Grolleau flew with them and interviewed team leader Jacques Bothelin.

But it's not all airshows in this issue...

Typhoon over Austria
Leading Austrian military aviation expert Wolfgang Hainzl examines the long-awaited service entry of the Austrian AF's new Eurofighter Typhoons, with exclusive photography by Katsuhiko Tokunaga.

Concorde — the end
Part Two of our Concorde 40th anniversary coverage — Bruce Hales-Dutton looks at why supersonic passenger travel came to a perhaps premature end, with the help of three men who flew this iconic airliner.

The Aircraft Defence Review
In part two of our Defence Review, Jon Lake issues his personal prescription for the future of the UK's air arms.

Serving Alaska
Keith Gaskell talks to Alaska Airlines' management about the fast-developing carrier's optimistic outlook despite difficult economic times, and reviews its impressive history.

Antei hero
The long-running Soviet and Russian AF service of the mighty Antonov An-22 Antei transport is covered by Stefan Büttner and Holger Müller.

Big in Japan
Dr Andreas Zeitler visits Tokyo's Narita International Airport.

'Varks' in the UK
Warren E. Thompson remembers the impressive history of the USAF's F-111 operations from Upper Heyford and Lakenheath, with the help of former 'Vark' pilots and unit commanders.

PLUS — In-depth news coverage including special reports on the latest RAF happenings, how the airline and airliner industries are coping with the recession, and the future of the Commemorative Air Force's Twin Mustang, Maulers and Dragon • Just Flight simulation special

That's a pity!

Sounds like a cracking issue, was hoping at least one magazine would cover the 1909 Reims show this year - great stuff!

Looking forward to the Air Tattoo piece as well...

As regards the Air Tattoo piece, the May issue will include a far more lengthy look at the Greenham years - I'm just finishing it now...
