15th August - Magnificent Musical Flying Display

Post by elterwater »

Looks like a replacement Flying Proms event has been organised as a drive-in:

https://www.shuttleworth.org/events/mag ... ngdisplay/

£120 per car :scream_cat:
Too strong for me as a single visitor for a pyro display, some singing and some fireworks, will pass.

The way this is going, it will be a case of handing over your car keys when you arrive as down payment on an entry ticket!!!!

I think that the Lancaster is going to be a display. Seem to remember them announcing a piece of music that it would be flying to yesterday.

Presumably straight back to Scampton after that but any ideas of earlier routing, please?

Much as I'd like to go to sate my aviation withdrawal symptoms, £120 is just too much for a single visitor.😢

Had some hops along the runway from the Wren at four foot or so and a Cub doing a weather check, but that's it in terms of the flying display, cloud too low for anything else to fly.

So.... apart from a radio broadcast, what did people get for their £120?

As well as the two aircraft mentioned above, all I've seen talked about is a few singers and fireworks in the clouds.

It does sound like a disappointing evening, but the guys at Shuttleworth must be just as gutted as anyone that bought a ticket.

Unfortunately weather is a big part of the game in our hobby!

Unfortunately, the weather doesn't always play ball. That's a real shame for everyone involved, especially after the weather we've had recently.

With respect I'm guessing they got exactly the same as they would have done at any airshow where the weather had curtailed flying, I'm not sure why the ticket price would have any bearing on what they got? As has been mentioned already the weather plays a big part in this hobby and as frustrating as it is that's just the way it is.

Because it wasn't £25, it wasn't £35, it wasn't even the £50 which the recent drive ins have been charged at. It was £120 which is a lot of money for sitting in a damp field, so I ask what did people who actually attended get for that money? Even with other washout events (RIAT, Duxford, even Shuttleworth in the past) there have at least been some other attractions to dive into.

I'm local to Shuttleworth so I want them to do well and to continue, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that they don't this by setting a high price bar with a substandard offering for future events, just because some people are happy to write it off as "just the way it is".

The "offering" was by no means substandard. The planned programme would have been well up to Shuttleworth's usual but the weather interfered. That was not Shuttleworth's fault and they should not be blamed.
nothing is confirmed at a show until its u/c hits the tarmac or it is running in for its display.....

The house was open for guided tours and the Swiss Garden was open for people to wander around. They had vintage bus tours going too and were driving some of the collection's cars up and down during the afternoon so there was some entertainment before the flying was meant to happen. The Spitfire Sisters did their radio performance as planned and the rest of the music that was planned to accompany the displays was played on the radio. The Wren flew/hopped. They had the firework finale and a team of remote controlled aeroplanes with lights on flew in front of them.

If the weather had been right then it would have been a great day I'm sure. Airshows are always subject to the weather etc, that is always stated on the website/ticket and this was just one where it didn't come off unfortunately.

Thank you, that's all I wanted to know!
I've attended the last two flying proms and considered the flying as a nice to have accompaniment to the orchestra and singing. You're far better off going to an actual Shuttleworth display if the flying is the main priority for you. It sounds like they've opened up more of the "regular" attractions at Shuttleworth which have been missing recently so I hope that they continue doing so for the remaining drive-in shows planned.

Out of interest are there any restrictions on vehicle sizes? Just wondering if I could hire a 48-seater bus and sell tickets at a tenner each. I'd make a tidy profit if they repeat this event!

Price is governed by vehicle parking space, so don't think you'd get a 48-seater into the Oversize space :D Also future shows are charging additional passenger fees beyond the first 2 :)

"Standard car parking space at 5x5m for vehicles up to 2m high and 2.5m wide. Oversize parking space 4.5 x 8m for vehicles over 2m high or 2.5m wide. Prices valid for up to 2 adults per vehicle. Additional adults are £20 each (children are free)."
