Types at every (R)IAT?

Post by CJS »

Just been wondering which (if any) aircraft types have graced each and every (R)IAT since 1971?

My guess (and that's all it is) would be the C-130 in various guises and perhaps the Spitfire. Anyone got any more?

The mighty Jet Provost must be in with a resonable shout? I guess there could have been a couple of years between RAF retirement and civil ownership where it might have been absent? I guess a Hurricane must have been at most of them although the lanc would have missed the odd year reciently.

Hurricane,
I wondered that, but there are so few compared to Spitfires that I kind of assumed there would have been at least one year without one.

Surely not at every one? Maybe, I dunno. Is there one going this year?

I can't think of much other than the C-130 which is in with a reasonable shout.

Anything ex British mil runs the risk of having a year off at some point! Ditto Hurricane and Spitfire, although the latter is more likely than the Hurricane.

The Hercules comfortably holds the record of the most nations represented with 35 and counting, how we could do with a South Korean one showing up, it actually wasn't present at the first in 1971, there was a RAF Belfast though ironically named "Heracles".

I think Spitfire might be the only type to be honest as I'm sure the Hurricane may have missed at some point with servicability or accidents.

Didn't enter service with the RAF until 1975....unless there were any Swedish ones at the IAT prior to that.

C160 Transall? I am struggling to recall if they have missed any shows in the last 10 years, but must have been a dead cert for all/most up until that point.

What about an Atlantic?

Types like that get nowhere near, was no Atlantic/Atlantique at the most recent one for example. No Germans in 1989 following Ramstein and no French Air Force that year.

JPs were almost ever present, but missed a couple 1994 and 1997 just after retirement before reappearing again with regularity. Chipmunk is possible but again may have missed a couple soon after retiring during the mega years when the in service stuff filled the airfield.

Since my first visit in 1977 we have had a Phantom at every show except the return to Fairford in 2002. Two updates left and fingers firmly crossed.

Greeks were there in 2016, but 2013-15 were non Phantom years.

None in 2018 either as I recall...

I was thinking Spitfire of one mark or other must be the answer for this. I can't imagine many British air shows since the war haven't had at least one...

Was there a Spitfire present in 1976? The Planet Avgeek "Air Tattoo Files" don't list one.

There's certainly no Phantom listed on the Air Tattoo 'looking back' section for 2018.
