One ACMI Tiger trap - Swiss at Waddington 1994

Post by capercaillie »

Some slide scans of the Swiss Air Force then annual deployment to Waddington to use the ranges. Mirage IIIS and F-5E and F-5F Tiger IIs were the order of the day back then before the arrival of their Hornets. The day I picked was meant to be sunny throughout, but ended up with some large blocks of cloud around, still with 4 launches a day, some reasonable opportunities to catch them. Three different RAF Sentries and a NATO example also caught moving. Hope you enjoy.

Another example of why people shouldn't really pee their pants just because the Red Arrows are relocating to Waddington for a few weeks?
Those ACMI Days were absolutely magic & your selection shows the variety of shots to be had from basically one location on one day!
I'm expecting Paddyboy from over on FC. to blow a gasket around 6am today when he sees these! :joy:

Cheers folks. Can't believe that its nearly 27 years ago, and apart from one of the Waddington deployed aircraft arriving at Woodford show in 1993 as we were leaving (!!!!), the only time I can remember seeing standard IIIS versions of their Mirages. When you think how regular the Swiss Hornet is about these days.

Great shots.

In 1992 a Mirage III and a F-5 were at the static at Coningsby airshow (both from Waddington with another 5 Mirage IIIs and 7 F-5s on deployment).
The same weekend as the famous Boscombe Dow ATI show.
The only weekend I saw standard Swiss Mirage IIISs apart from many other special aircraft.
