God Elp all of us! Vimy Arrival in Ireland 2005

Post by Georgeconna »

Hello Gents,

I think these fit the quota as they are well over 5 years old, in Fact. God Good 14 years ago.

I have never posted these before but some have been in a Few books and Aeroplane Monthly at the time.

For me this was one of the finest moments to happen for some time. Especially in Ireland

An Epic Transatlantic flight with Steve Fosset (RIP) (Pictured in the Yellow Jacked below) and Marck Rebholz (Having a Pint) touching down in Clifden Golf Course, Co. Galway. Luckily I slipped the crowd line with some press bluster BS and got a nice arrival point. Arrival was in Typical Irish Weather, Sun Shine in between showers with some nice cloud build ups.

Finally a highlight for my Dad (in the hat) of helping to maneuver the Vimy to its parking spot. He would not ab able to do that now

Beautiful, thank you for sharing these.
Personally I only ever saw the Vimy fly once, at Woburn during a Moth Rally and it made quite an impression!

Cracking photos. What happened to the Vimy replica? Is she still flying or in a museum?
Cheers Phil

Great pics!

The Vimy is now part of the Brooklands Museum at Weybridge, she flew into a temporary grass strip next to the museum a few years ago. Being built in the US under Experimental regulations apparently made it very difficult to operate day-to-day in the UK, she was based at Dunsfold before delivery to the museum but the amount of paperwork and expense that went into each individual flight eventually made flying it impractical.

I'm glad to say I saw her fly several times in her various guises, always very stately and impressive. Oh and very noisy!

Well done George ,I did not go up for this can't remember why.
Lucky to see her several times when I was in England.
Great to see an Irish welcome you could not get that freedom in UK .
Hope to catch up with you one day.

I must dig out my cast collection of photos from the loft. I saw the Vimy a few times, most notably when it first arrived at Brooklands, and when it left Farnborough on what I think was the start of the flight to Australia. I know the construction was different to the original but what a magnificent machine, beautiful and stately in the air, and as has been said, incredibly loud!

Really evocative and a great set of pics.

Reminds me of Clifden where my wife's family is from and lots of relatives.

Great account of what looked a special day. The black and white photographs are especially nice, very appropriate.
