Another Brick in the wall - the Buccaneer

Post by capercaillie »

The mighty Buccaneer, a big old beast but very effective in its low level role, flying faster than most with a weapon load despite the lack of reheat. Arrival days were always fun, a bit of smoke in the distance, then dropping out of sight before emerging at treetop height just before the airfield, full whack down the runway. Made back in those glory days where all the jets had individual personalities and looks. Anyway enough rose tints, some pics.

At Bedford, just prior to being auctioned off. Went to Hurn, painted in atrocious corporate colours and now in Ireland I think. Foxhunter test bird.

One of the three yellow and green aircraft specially ordered for testing purposes, painted in ripple with a white belly and then it gained various spare parts like Frankenstein, seen here landing at Yeovilton in 1992 and Fairford in 1994.

Why, no why did they do it? So close to the end, Yeovilton 1993 static.

Hi Paul, nice picture of a great jet. I am lucky to still be able to work round 3 of these ladies and the thing that struck me is how big they actually are. The shots bring back good memories.
I do have 2 issues, It looks like you have repeated your 9th shot with your first one and the one going down the runway at Riat looks more like it is at high altitude for a bucc! :

Hi Paul how obvious now side by side lol! Completely missed the ladders! Did you know when testing the avionic fits for the Tornado. They found a buccaneer fitted with them, was superior a lot argued the avionics should go into new build Buccs!

Great stuff Nigel, lovely shot of 988, so pleased at least one survived to be seen around in the original scheme,

I think your take off is 1989 IAT and not up on here before. Quality scanning too.

Yep, the take off is 89.

Here's another shot of 988 in 91, in the static
Image

the scanning? tch, I hate it, really needs updating and doing properly with a film scanner, to up-to-date resolution and size. And to actually scan my collection, rather than just a few shots here and there which is what I did years ago with these. I guess I'm never going to get a better opportunity than 2020..

Great thread. Nothing like seeing a Buccaneer at low-level. Happy days.
