2021 Review - Heavy

Post by shorsley »

Jumping on the 2021 review bandwagon. It's been a varied year, but civil photography has formed the backbone of my shooting this year so everything is in this thread.

Due to lockdowns and other happenings my year began with a spot of shooting at Heathrow. A new location in Stanwell, which I'm unlikely to visit again as 09R Arrivals are rare outside of single runway ops.

ABX Air 767 in need of some paint:

The Xiamen Air 797 was a new catch for me:

Then round to the T4 mound for departures:

Nice to see an Egypt Air 787 opposed to the usual 737 or A330:

Not strictly 100% aviation but there are aircraft on it. Take two for HMS Queen Elizabeth's departure for her maiden deployment to the Far East in May:

June and back up to Heathrow for Air Force One's visit:

The BEA Baby-bus was missing from my BA Retro-Jet collection, so it was good to catch her whilst waiting for AF1:

Still in June and a trip to RAF Brize Norton to catch the An225. Sadly chose the wrong end of the runway for landing and ended-up shooting through the fence:

Smokey departure:

Caught some of the home team whilst waiting for the An225:

Boris wasn't on "Vespina", but apparently was on this Wildcat that flew through as part of Armed Forces Day events:

A few days later and the first 'Landor Experience' at Dunsfold:

July and photographing a track day at Goodwood and the resident Boultbee Spitfire G-ILDA was earning her keep:

I didn't hang around long enough to catch the Duxford warbirds that popped in because I had to make the mad dash over to Gosport to catch the Goodyear blimp, which was making its way along the South Coast. As soon as the South Coast tour was announced I knew the shot I wanted to capture:

Still July and the Puma 50 Flypast over Farnborough:

My bad luck in catching special aircraft continued with the anniversary marked Puma as it flew pretty much overhead:

As everyone else headed to the coast on the hottest day of the year, my friend and I headed to Heathrow:

Bournemouth was the only show I managed to attend:

Back to Heathrow in October to try to catch G-TTNA in her new "BA Better World" livery. Turns out it was the only day of the month she didn't fly! But it was good to see some A380s back at LHR:

A couple of days and the Reds were down in Portsmouth to perform a display for the Pacific Futures Conference being hosted on HMS Prince of Wales. Sadly it was only 8 jets, half a display due to the location and tricky conditions as it was dull and overcast and just before sunset. Still, it was on the doorstep:

And finally rounding off 2021 with the TimeLine Events shoot with Vulcan XM655 at Wellesbourne. Held during Storm Arwen, it was dull most of the afternoon, but the sun popped through the clouds just before it set:

Hope they've been of interest and C&C is always welcome. There's (a lot) more on my Flickr if anyone is interested and you've managed to get this far! Hopefully I'll get to a few more nightshoots and more airshows will return to the calendar in 2022.

Agreed, the Vulcan shots at the end are very nice.

Very nice! The Vulcan images and the sunlit Landor 747 against foreboding clouds are excellent!

Very nice, Sarah. As others have said, the Vulcan shots are probably the pick of the bunch, though I do like the HMS Queen Elizabeth shot with the F-35s on the deck.

A great set, but my vote goes to the first Vulcan shot with the reflection in the puddle 👏👏

Cracking set of images, really like AF1 over the trees, the last Vulcan and the Fireflies shots though.

An excellent set of images. The first three look as though they were taken in challenging light but you have managed to achieve good contrast and colour repro. Likewise for the last string of civil a/c, from the A380

That ABX '67 could do with another coat of paint after some proper surface prep.
Cheers,
