Memory card back-up

Post by Blackbird »

I used to have a portable back-up (sorry can't remember the name of it) for use when travelling but found that it won't take RAW images. It hasn't been important until now as I have done very little travelling post pandemic.

Can anyone recommend a storage unit that will?

TIA

G'day Andy, was it a device that auto-downloaded files after inserting the SD or CF card? I usually take a small laptop (HP Mini, 2012 vintage, 360GB) but when baggage weight/volume is critical, I use a RAVPower hub. It is a combination router, hub and charging battery (about 7,000mAH). You can download a free app for it from the manufacturer's website that allows you to control it with a smart phone. Attach a portable SSD (even a spinning HD), insert your SD (only) card and you're away. Take a look here:

https://www.ravpower.com/products/rp-wd ... 1a57&_ss=r

If you're using a dual-card camera (I recall that you have an R5), the other option is to simultaneously save images to both cards and keep both. This is an expensive option, particularly with the price of CF Express cards for your R5. Good luck.

If you find something suitable, please share with us. TIA.
Cheers,

Thanks George. I'm looking for a separate unit so that should my camera get stolen, I will have the images backed-up independently.

That sounds like you have only one large CF Express and SD card, so don't have the option of removing it/them from your camera and storing in a separate location.

By way of an update, ln advice from the guys at WEX, I've ordered one of these:
https://www.wexphotovideo.com/search/?q ... version=V2

I wanted a device that I could use without needing to take a laptop with me and this is what they suggested. I won't receive for another 10 days or so. I'll report back once I've tried it out.

With the 5D mk111 you can cut down on extra hard drives/ cables/ chargers etc by copying images from one card to the other. i.e images stored on the CF card can be copied to one or more sd cards (or micro sd with adapter).

On the 5D iii use "Image copy" in the PLAY1 menu. You can then copy all images, individual folders or selected images.

It will even skip or replace duplicate images if you ask it to so you can just back up 'new' images even if you have backed up the card earlier.

Interested to know if the later canon models have this facility.

Whilst not a 'new' camera, my 5DIV has the same capability. I generally shoot in "rec to multiple" which gives me two copies of everything. Even then, I store a third copy of all images on a portable HD. Probably overkill.

Brief update: I chased WEX on Thursday when it still hadn't arrived only to be told "Didn't they tell you it was out of stock when you ordered it". No they didn't.

She said she'd phone the supplier and update me by email. I'm still waiting. I have had numerous successful transactions (both purchases and sales) with WEX in the past, so this is very disappointing.

The day before I went to Peru, WEX finally told me that the unit I ordered was no longer available and they didn't have anything comparable. I am not happy!

Perhaps you could check and reconsider the RAV unit that I recommended at the beginning of the post. I haven't checked whether they're available again, but it's worth a look. It was what I exclusively used when I was at Oshkosh 2022. Good luck, mate.

Just checked on Amazon UK which has the infamous line:
"We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

Arghh!
