I understand that this Dragon Rapide ended up on its nose today. I hope the damage isn't too severe.

Duxford Tuesday 21st June:
TFC's Bearcat was hoping to get airborne today, sadly we didn't get to see it fly (nothing to do with the air raid to the South !)
Duxford's Lysander will be providing rides soon with Aerial Collective:
Prices for that back seat start at £4,500:
Finally, a different type of Merlin visiting today:

Love that shot of the Bearcat with the fire in the background.

The RN Merlin flew nice and low over my house in Hertfordshire, wondered where it was going to/from.

Re: Duxford Diary 2022
So which markings are correct in terms of the placement of the squadron ‘ZD’ codes? Or are they correct on both airframes and were simply applied differently in the field?
Re: Duxford Diary 2022
More magnificent images, thank you folks! Seeing the two 222Sqn Spitfires together is truly wonderful.
From 1954 to 1962 this lovely machine was owned by Wanganui Aero Work, which I worked for some time later. It'd be great to see her come back to Whanganui one day! Pretty please, Bruce?

From the AP that I have seen the application of squadron codes is correct either way -Jakub.Zurek wrote: ↑Fri 01 Jul 2022, 9:21 pmSo which markings are correct in terms of the placement of the squadron ‘ZD’ codes? The code and individual letters may be placed two before and one behind the roundels or vice versa....
...The squadron two-letter code may be applied either forward or aft of the fuselage roundel according to the space available. The single aircraft letter is then to be applied at the opposite side of the roundel. The two letters of the squadron code are not to be separated under any circumstances; for example :-
Squadron code letters TP
Aircraft letter R
Port side R roundel TP, reading from left to right.
Starboard side TP roundel R, reading from left to right.
Underneath my gruff exterior lies an even gruffer interior...

Ok going to ask the obvious question is there an airfield / temporary landing strip at Heveningham Hall ? Never heard of the place ? Google say there is a Country fair and appears to be a classic car show, but what about the Spitfires ? Heveningham is near Southwold on the east coast.

Re: Duxford Diary 2022
The Lysander from Duxford is there too, going by photos on Google. Plus about a dozen other light aircraft.DOUGHNUT wrote: ↑Sat 02 Jul 2022, 6:27 pm"EP120 and PL983 departed for a weekend at Heveningham Hall"

Re: Duxford Diary 2022
I agree with the interpretation of the AP. However, both Spitfires must have come off the line within a week, yet the camouflage schemes (painted by spraying over rubber mat masks) are substantially different; the roundels have different radii of colour boundaries, which is unlikely. Given the proximity of the serial numbers its also highly likely they were both issued to the squadron as part of an initial outfit so would have had codes applied simultaneously: one would therefore have expected standard styles (they differ) and standard placement policy within the squadron (again they differ). It's at the very least interesting, if both are accurate, but the original question is a good one and I also doubt both are actually right.BobL wrote: ↑Sat 02 Jul 2022, 10:25 amFrom the AP that I have seen the application of squadron codes is correct either way -Jakub.Zurek wrote: ↑Fri 01 Jul 2022, 9:21 pmSo which markings are correct in terms of the placement of the squadron ‘ZD’ codes? Re: Duxford Diary 2022
One is very accurate using period 222 Sqn images for reference. The other is overdue a re-paint...but it is expensive.

Duxford Monday 4th July:
Victor XH648 was repositioned in Airspace this morning to allow fitting of the outer wing sections:
The Lysander returned from a weekend away:
Visiting Tiger Moth G-ASKP:
The registration sounded familiar. Here's G-BSKP:
Also in Hangar 2 this morning:
Another visitor today, Bulldog G-ASAL. Still Prestwick based, this aircraft was the Scottish Aviation / BAe company demonstrator and has recently been returned to its 1973 colours.

Re: Duxford Diary 2022
Fantastic to see yet more progress on the Victor!
Re: Duxford Diary 2022
Are any of these workshop areas visible from the general public areas? Very nice photo of the Spit in hangar 2.
Re: Duxford Diary 2022
Only one (commercially sensitive) building is not accessible, visibility otherwise is pretty good but changes regularly. As a regular visitor, there's nearly always a new angle to capture every visit.
