Revell GB - FTS's F4U-5 Corsair *Finished*

Post by FTS »

Typhoon01 beat me to the post by building the Naval version of this kit so i'll be building the Marine Corp option. It's not a problem as I was going to buy another one of these kits so that I could build both. Now my spidey sense is telling me that this kit is the Italeri kit. Why? Well the sprues are exactly the same as the Italeri F4U-5N that I've just finished. Also when compared to the other F4U-1 Corsairs that Revell do (which are bloody awful!) these are massively better in quality, although not amazing.

Box and sprues for now.

Made a start on this today. Because the kit is actually an F4U-5N night fighter it doesn't come with any ordnance or bomb racks and wants you to mount to external fuel tank on the centreline. The problem with that is that the F4U-5 didn't carry a centreline tank and flew with it carried on the starboard pylon with the port normally carrying a 500lb or napalm tank (wake up at the back!! ) So what I've decided to do is leave the tank off and attach the rocket stubs. It's not accurate but it's the best I can do with this kit.

Base coat for the chipping applied. I couldn't find any metallic enamel paints in the stash so I've had to give a coat of dusty Tamiya acrylics. It shouldn't matter though as it's only for the chipping. I've coated it with some layers of hairspray to protect the base layer for when I do the chipping a bit later on. You may have also noticed that the guns have been replaced from the night fighter version to the appropriate day F4U-5 version. The nose for this kit is much too short but there's nothing I can do about that so it'll stay as is.

Chipping ? If you can take a few pics of that process it would be great.

All you need to know. It's the same principle with this build except I'm building a plane not a tank (you might have noticed)

Well like the muppet I am I forgot to spray the red before the blue, which would have made life much easier! Because I don't intend to have any chipping in the red areas I went ahead and chipped small areas around panels and the walkways with a pin. I then coated it with Humbrol Gloss to provide a protective layer. Not to add the red.

This would have been so much easier if I sprayed the red first! I've also ran out of Tamiya tape so i've painted the red by hand, first with a white undercoat. The decals were very brittle and split which is surprising considering the kit isn't that old! I'll leave the decal setting solution to do its work and crack on with some more tomorrow evening.
