aviationanoraks.co.uk is now aviationanoraks.com (27/2/24)

Post by aviationanoraks »

Hi,

As a first time poster here I wanted to find somewhere to make an introduction, and this seemed the best spot.

I am part of a small family group who started aviationanoraks.co.uk back in 2007.
The idea was purely just somewhere to share the images we have taken at various airshows, airfields and other places, and since then it has been updated either weekly or fortnightly depending upon the subject matter.

We also try to photograph and record as many war memorials as we can when on our travels, and these have a separate section within the website.

The website has now grown into quite a large record in the twelve years it has been going, so please take a look around if you so wish. We don't claim to be excellent photographers, but we do try our best!
We do keep words to a minimum though, and try to let the photographs speak for themselves.

I will update this thread each time we update the website, so please feel free to check back (most likely) each Saturday.

To start off, our latest update is the final part (of three) from our visit to the Yorkshire Air Museum in June, and features the impressive recreation of Handley Page Halifax LV907.
The previous three updates featured the museum collection, their Mirage IV, and on our memorials page photos of some of the many memorials at Elvington.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope you find something of interest.
I also hope I will be able to make a relevant contribution to other parts of the forum as time goes on!

All the best,

Interesting to see photos of the Valiant outside. When was this? Would have loved to see that!

Can’t remember exactly what year, but up to twelve months prior to the Cold War Exhibition opening.
I did have more photos taken over a number of months as the parts arrived and were reassembled but they are now in the loft! I must find the disk and get them uploaded, sounds like a job for over Christmas!!

I did wonder - it was under your '2018' section so I began to worry i'd missed something recent.

We do sometimes add some old images from our archives (usually when we don’t have more recent images!)
Got hundreds of prints from the 80’s onwards that I occasionally scan and add for something different as well as pre-website digital photos.

This weeks website update is actually non-aviation, covering our first ever visit to the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
An incredible collection of arms and armour, well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Latest update at aviationanoraks.co.uk is the start of our coverage of the Military Pageant airshow at Old Warden in July.
We have given the three Fw44 from Germany their own set, as it is starting to feel like a rare event seeing European based historic aircraft in the UK!

Our first update of 2020 is the last part of our coverage of the 2019 Shuttleworth Military Airshow.
The gathering of seven airworthy Hurricanes was an incredible sight and our own airshow moment of the year, so we decided to give them their own feature.

New this week at aviationanoraks.co.uk are photos from our visit to the Manston History Museum.
At less than £5 per person entrance fee this was a cheap way to spend a few hours around aircraft and learn about this historic airfield.

Staying at Manston this week, we crossed the car park to visit the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum, and take a look around the stunning Hurricane IIc LF751.
The aircraft is painted to represent BN230 that took part in the 1942 Dieppe raid.

Aviationanoraks.co.uk stays with the Kent theme this week with photos from our first visit to the incredible Historic Dockyard Chatham.
We are not ‘into’ navy history but after spending the day here we did return for a second visit a week later as there is just so much to see. Even then we didn’t have enough time to take in everything so a return trip is on the cards at some point.
Tickets are valid for as many return visits as possible in twelve months from date of issue so it can be fantastic value for money. Then there are the pies at the food outlets........!

More from the Historic Dockyard Chatham this week with photos of HMS Ocelot.
This former Royal Navy Oberon class submarine was the last one built at Chatham so it is quite fitting that it is now preserved here.

This weeks new addition at aviationanoraks.co.uk are photos from our visit to the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum.
The new building next to St Georges Chapel and the groundwork caused some issues when first built, but looking beyond that the stories that are told and the artefacts on show are a very fine tribute to all that served at this famous RAF Station.
We also found the staff and volunteers to be very friendly and passionate about what they are doing, something that can be lacking at some museums.

Following on directly from last week, once we had finished at the Memorial Museum we drove around to the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar for a pre-booked guided tour.
The tour was hosted by a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, and lasted somewhat longer than it should have. What should have been under a couple of hours turned into a very enjoyable afternoon in the company of like minded people and classic aircraft.

Spitfire IX MJ755 that has since flown.

A move away from aviation this week at aviationanoraks.co.uk with photos from somewhere that has become very special to us, the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent.
After seeing the television series on the BBC featuring the Sanctuary we booked Mrs A on a photography experience day to coincide with our trip to Kent.
She had a truly magnificent and memorable day in the company of these wonderful cats while I spent a relaxed day in the sun just over the hedge at Headcorn airfield.

Our latest update this week at aviationanoraks.co.uk is from a glorious day at wonderful Headcorn aerodrome.
A good number of movements throughout the day, including Percival Proctor RM221 which had eluded us for years.

Exactly one week after our first visit to Chatham Historic Dockyard in September we returned to try and take in the rest of this impressive museum (We failed, we needed a third day to see everything and complete the history trails!)
This week at aviationanoraks.co.uk we present a set of photos from this day with more collection specific photos to follow.
Below is a close up of part of the absolutely stunning (and very large) model of HMS Victory that was built for a film in the 1940s.
