I don’t think anyone has mentioned that there likely will be, hence why I used the word expected as past tense when I brought it up :)

Weird that there's no A-400M. I wonder if DBH didn't invite them, or if the team rejected attending RIAT.
The A-400M wasn't confirmed until the 27th of June in 2019. So it may still be announced.
Possibly, however the update last week indicated they "had no space for civilian flying acts" on the weekend days....so that would rule it out, other than a Friday only appearance maybe (which I can't really see happening)
Yes that's fair, I had forgot that was mentioned. Who knows. Regardless of how clear that seems, it would be surprising not to see it participate, given it's a regular.

Am I right in thinking there are usually some rehearsals and validations after most of the arrivals wrap up Thursday afternoon?
It depends what you mean by arrivals wrapping up really?

In 2019 for example the Romanians MiG21s and C-27J both arrived around the 6.00pm-6.20pm mark. MiG didn't fly a practice at Fairford at all.

A lot of the rehearsals happen in the early morning on Thursday before 10am if they've arrived the day before, with other display items that arrive Thursday usually in the pm slots.
Many thanks for this and others who have replied, it is my first opportunity to do the Thursday this year so all new to me. I’ll have a 3 hour drive down Thursday so didn’t know whether to go for an arrivals ticket and go on base, or head for Totterdown and see what comes my way.

Oh right, well I'd definitely suggest getting yourself an arrivals ticket personally. Keep an eye on the wind direction & pick your end accordingly to what you would rather see in terms of action. But aim to be there close to gate opening time if you want to be at the fence-line!

I generally go Eastern end if they're on 27 ( landing right to left from the showground side). But the Western end is probably more 'photogenic' if photography is your main aim....if they're on 09 then I go western end.

Oh so they have! In the past they have had a few on sale on the day on a first come first served basis....but I don't know if that's the case again this year obviously. 🤷‍♂️

Just touching back on that point about the polish mig 29s I don’t think Poland have been using them at air shows for a good while now because even at Radom for the 100th anniversary of the Air Force there wasn’t one present

Just checked the SWAF HF website and they have now updated RIAT with three aircraft type...Saab 37 Viggen, Saab 35 Draken & Saab 32 Lansen.
I know the joke is always that the SWAFHF put down RIAT on their schedule, but they have now stated aircraft type???

Wishlist ^

With regards to the no further civilian participation being added to the weekend flying, I read that as it is. No further.

Just because we can't see them in the flying line up at the moment, doesn't mean there are some civvies still not to be announced. If the links to the Swedes are to be true, it's likely DBH would've been in contact with them for months, as opposed to just recent contact.

Anyway, why am I getting my hopes up, even in the great news they did attend, i'd imagine them to be static only, as much as i'd love to see the splinter camo Viggen blasted round the sky of Fairford.

Edit: Waits for Peter to tell me off because i've read too much into it and I couldn't be further from the truth :hide:

I thought the wishlist thread is for aircraft I would like to attend. On the list I made there are only realistic candidates, some of which I would rather not see at riat.

This thread is getting a bit wish-listy and clogged. If people could err on the side of caution, that’d be great.

Odd comments, or reasonable discussions (such as the veracity of the Swedes, which is different this year) or USAF flying given the changeable calendars and comments from DBH is one thing. Posting a(n incomplete) list of possible things from regulars or countries that are amber on the list is another.

Peter warned about not reading too much into the amber lights - it’s just to give a bit of transparency. Let’s not abuse that openness by giving those amber lights more weight than they ought to just because we desire it.

But there’s not really any basis for “realistic” in some of the items on your list tbh.

Unless I’ve missed all the rumours about Turkish Stars, or a P-1, or an E-2C flying display, then it’s hard to really draw that line. Israel aren’t even flashing amber, so unless I’ve missed news that they want to send a C-130, where has that come from? They’re incredibly rare participants. I can only recall one RIAT in the past 10-12 years that they’ve attended.

That’s different to, say, the Swedes, or potential USAF flying from non-demo teams, or the possibility of the Black Eagles where there are tangible, real crumbs of information to be discussed.

It’s not a criticism of you at all, I add. But I just wanted to focus everyone’s minds back to avoid any further stray, and it wasn’t just your comment, others had made some, too - and in the round, I feel it’s getting a bit “wish-list”.

While a bit of thread discipline is a good thing, when you have a thread titled 'RIAT 2022 Discussion Thread' surely anything RIAT 2022 related goes? Unless it's the Discussion - but just don't discuss anything that might and isn't confirmed to attend - Thread?

I'm guilty of the same. I post because it's meant to be fun to speculate / guess / stimulate conversation even if it's a load of rubbish and potentially pie in the sky.

As I said, it is not a criticism of anyone at all (I’m also probably marginally guilty). Just a gentle re-focusing of minds before it gets out of hand.

If everyone could try to keep wishlist/actual 2022 discussion (appreciate there’s an overlap) separate, that would be tops.

Also it’s worth noting that moderator decisions are not a matter for discussion/debate because that also clogs up threads, and I don’t want to further derail the thread by debating a moderating decision that tries to keep a thread clean - I won’t comment further, and future posts about it in this thread will be deleted (people are absolutely free to DM me if they do want to discuss though 👍🏻).

Just trying to find the right balance.

Hopefully after 'the longest day' they will say what time they plan to start and finish the flying programme and how many display slots are still 'free'
