Greenham 81 - lovely!

Another Woodford from me, the much talked about 1992 edition. Perfect weather - yes, really!

Visited the Australian War Memorial’s magnificent collection a few times these
pic’s taken 26/6/16

The War Memorial have a number of aeroplanes in their original markings

Australian War memorial’s Mk II Spitfire
Image

An interesing trivia titbit the Imperial War Museum’s MK I Spitfire wear’s very
similar and not so common on, earlier models, grey/green camo.
Image
There are many variations but factory finish should have been put on with rubber mat templates and hard-edged. Both the Spitfires in your photos show overspray which probably indicates an in-service repaint, perhaps prior to issue to an OTU later in the war rather than in squadron service (which both should have left by the end of 1941 if not before.) The repaint would have been to the latest directive on camouflage i.e. temperate land scheme dark green/ocean grey/medium sea grey undersides. On a certainty scale, somewhere between perhaps and probably.....

To North Weald in 1986, for the Fighter Meet. This was a really interesting event, as the warbird collecting bug was starting to bite on the UK scene. Corporate sponsorship by Northwest Orient airlines brought some very interesting participants too. And not all fighters. Shots taken over yesterday, today and tomorrow so to speak.

Dedicated to our North Weald locals on the board. Dan B, do you recognise the place? I haven't been for years now, I'm not sure how much its changed.

Clearly, the sun was in the wrong place, but it was a show to remember. If rather crowded and infrastructure wise, a little overwhelmed by the number of visitors.

Bits of it, certainly. I can't quite work out where the crowdline would have been though as you seem to be in various locations - were flying jets parked crowdside? The tower remains, the building behind the Spitfire looks familiar (the Squadron I think?) and the characteristic poplar (?) trees remain.

It looks like the western side of the airfield is a lot less developed though, and it's undergoing even bigger changes right now - the NPAS Police hangar has been operational for nearly a year, the massive new Air Ambulance facility is currently going up alongside it, and the flying club has been relocated from the Squadron to the south-west corner of the main runway to clear the way for Aero Legends. There's also a customs lorry park for post-Brexit is the NW corner of the airfield, so it's all getting a lot more congested there now.

You're right actually Dan, there are three different locations that have served to confuse. The Jag on finals is at one end, on the Friday. We then moved to the other end, where the IofAM Hunter, warbird run and break, and the Harvard and Aces High T-33 are shot from. The latter two were being moved round the peri track over to the show ground. The two Lightnings were on static display at the rear of the show ground as I remember. Everything else, albeit with slight variations as I did the two show days, were from a fairly central spot on the rope.

The OFMC run and break shows the empty show ground from the other side of the runway looking back towards it.

I should have really gone outside on the second day to counter that light, but as ever, I probably enjoyed the show too much to compromise it.

In 2007 I went to Coningsby for an event to mark the retirement of the Jaguar. This also included a look around one of the hangars and the BBMF's facility.

I tried this earlier, but somehow lost the lot when I tried to edit and add another 29th June.

29th June 2018 I popped up to Plymouth Hoe to try and catch the advertised Helicopters arriving for Armed Forces Day:

29th June 2005 there was an Exercise at RAF St Mawgan: (these are all slide scans)

Waddo again, this time 2007 and a very wet, cold and overcast day. I think this was the year that they cancelled the Sunday show. Luckily, or otherwise, I went on Saturday and there were good exhibits to see.
