Day two from our trip to Italy, our first full day. What was great about our tour of Italy is that, for a lot of the bases we visited, we were the first non-Italian civilians to have access to these bases for a number of years, after a relaxation of very tight rules around civilian spotters.

We visited the charming little air base at Latina, home of 70º Stormo, the Aeronautica Militare's flight training centre, and their rare as hell SF-260EAs, and some really gorgeous otherwise hidden preserved aircraft around the place.

This preserved SF260M was given this glorious scheme to celebrate the unit's 50th in 2005.

And then we headed down south for most of the rest of the week. On the way, we called into Piana Delle Orme Museum, a sort of delightfully weird agricultural/wartime museum/zoo, including a P-40, Starfighter, a pair of P-166s and others, and these:

Quite cool to see this EC-119G Flying Boxcar, the only one of this type in Italy, and one of only 3 Flying Boxcars in the country at all. Apparently the EC-119G was modified from the regular "C" variants for satellite tracking. It was a former US model before going to the AMI, so whether the Italians used it for that purpose, or just as a regular C-119, I don't know.

If I recall correctly, I wasn't too well so didn't attend work on this day in 2013. . . . .

It seems the sun never shines on the Derwent valley. Just been looking through my (fairly ropey) photos from the 65th event in 2008.
Maybe the sun will shine in 2023...

On the third day of our Italy tour, we visited Gioia del Colle, made famous recently as one of the multi-national bases used in the 2011 bombing campaign over Libya, including by RAF Typhoons and Tornado GR4s.

Ordinarily, Gioia Del Colle is home to 36º Stormo, flying EF-2000s, and a couple of other units.

We first visited 84° Centro CSAR, a detatchment of the nationwide search and rescue unit that is 15° Stormo, who had two HH139As for us to clamber around. They demonstrated the FLIR and other capabilities, and it's mightily impressive!

ImageStorm cometh by Tom Jones, on Flickr

This guy was a hero:

Then we visited the 36 Stormo EF-2000s, and sadly photography was limited to just two twin-sticks in a hangar surrounded by stuff, and the squadron was on night-flying duties, so we couldn't catch any in the air, but we had a lot of really interesting talks with the pilots and a lecture on the capabilities of the EF-2000, and we saw a special-tail full and ready QRA-fit EF-2000. It was a weird experience to be walking about a foot away from live missiles, but sadly photography was restricted.

*BUT* the day was saved by the Italian Navy AV-8, a pair of which had deployed from Grottaglie to Gioia to get some training in:

A very sad day back in 2007 with the first arrivals of Jaguars at Cosford. It was probably made all the worse by me having a naff lens at the time so excuse the quality of the shots, more a record than anything!

Day four of our Italy trip in 2016, the day after visiting Gioia del Colle, we spent an amazing day at Lecce-Galatina home of 61º Stormo, the Aeronautica Militare’s flight training wing.

Based there was Aermacchi MB339s, the MB339A MLU and the MB339CD. Cosmetically there isn’t much in it, but the latter is shown by the AAR probe. Also based there are the MB339 PANs of the Frecce Tricolori.

We also got to see the brand new T-346 Masters, and had a great tour of their new facilities.

Also deployed there at the time, (and the only time I ever managed to see them!) were four Belgian AlphaJets, flown by French pilots.
