Aviation- On This Day
Re: Aviation- On This Day
On this day in 2007 I was on a two week APC trip to Poland, one of the first real on base tours there at the time. 1st base was Marlbork, A Mig 29 base. We turned up early as you would only to be told no flying till the evening! So a quick rejig meant we had to come back in the evening. But the did allow us a visit to one of the Hangars.
Some of the guys wanted a smoke so with a guide they went outside at the top end of the hangar, I was chatting to them and I looked round the side of the Hangar and saw the next shot. I asked were we allowed to shoot these? The guide said yes we didn't think you would be interested?
What do you think?
It turned out they had quite a grave yard full of them and we filled our boots!
Evening came and I had some of the best evening shooting of live aircraft ever.
The base commander came out and gave his own private air display really giving it the beans!
One of our team could not climb the jet blast hills we were shooting from, so got this shot of us which has been nick named night of the long lenses!

The less said about the bizarre and awful display line for the Reds (and the Typhoon single fast pass and pull-up) the better:

As always, one of the star items gets the worst weather of the day:

This thread is one of the best things to come out of lock down, honestly.
Two posts from me today. First, the last of my four days on the hallowed ground of Boscombe Down, a trio of departures. 1990.

Re: Aviation- On This Day
Thirteen years ago today and it only seems like yesterday that I sneaked out of work early and dashed over to Cosford to see the second wave of the "flying tin openers" Jags arriving, 6 sqn having disbanded just a few days earlier. It was another really bittersweet moment, just awesome to see fast jets beat up the airfield but sad to see them go from frontline action. We were treated to a number of missed approaches, touch and go's and fast passes before they landed and lined up in front of the waiting press. There was a feature on BBC Midlands today later that day where most people on the railway platform had their 5 seconds of fame! A great day I won't forget.

I do regret not being able to free myself up from work for the Jaguars at Cosford. I was never the biggest Jag fan in the world but that was an occasion. Was it really 13 years ago?!
I have a feeling today may be our busiest yet on this thread. First submission from me goes back to my first show with anything longer than a 50mm lens
SSAFA Air Display RAF Church Fenton, 1983:

This was North Yorkshire, not California.. I'd bought myself a polarising filter and wasn't afraid to use it
post Unipart, and now unsponsored, but still dancing to "shine on you crazy diamond"

Re: Aviation- On This Day
into the 90's now, and 28 years ago today I was settled in the FATI Enclosure (no, really!), for day one of my favourite airshow ever, Air Tournament International, Boscombe Down, 1992. I didn't think we'd get to go back after 1990, and here we were again, and the sun was shining.
Caper, you got more from today?
more to come from this show, and anybody who was there, please post.

Moving on from my favourite show, to one of my favourite venues, Woodford. A hugely underrated show in the 90's, it was coming towards the end in 99. Its main coup this year was Patrouille de France and Frecce Tricolori.

Third and final arrival day at Boscombe Down for ATI92, among highlights were the Martin baker Meteor, a Warton based Lightning (gibber), cannon F-111D and four Eglin F-15s (again) and French Navy Crusaders.

Re: Aviation- On This Day
Then the millennium happened, and within a short time, having paid over a grand for a very flimsy piece of plastic that was an EOS-300D, we were in the digital world.
2005, Cosford Airshow. Rather grey. There was a little foreign participation to add to the standard fare, which at the time included two Tornado, Harrier, Jaguar and Merlin solo displays.
without doubt, the star was a flying display from a RNZAF C-130, with this ace nose-down low pass down the runway

Ace Paul, I knew you'd have some ATI92 for us.
I had a last one for today on my list - Cosford in 2011- but it was a wash out. Didn't take a photo. But I'll take a moment to remember how grim the weather was, how wet I got, and how early I got home

Re: Aviation- On This Day
I missed that one at Cosford, I have a feeling I was at Volkel, we had the Kiwi Herc there I think, seeing the Saab on the grass is quite weird though. Would have loved to have seen the Jordanian F-5s, just a bit too early for me.
More ATI to come from the weekend and Monday (classiest departure backdrop for an IAT event).

Re: Aviation- On This Day
Probably my favourite show - ever. But I went on the Saturday, 13 June so that's for tomorrow. But only just as I somehow deleted the pics from my external HD and have only just managed to recover them - and I'm not certain I've got them all. A very unnerving and anxious experience.

Re: Aviation- On This Day
On this day in 1992, I too was in the FATI enclosure for arrivals, enjoying beautiful blue skies and a stunning variety of aircraft. Probably the most enjoyable airshow Ive been fortunate enough to attend. Below are a few scanned negatives, showing a bit of wear and tear.

Good stuff Phil, its always great seeing events you attended from different viewpoints.
I'm away from computers and files until Monday, so I'm going to be cheeky and post tomorrow this evening, hopefully it doesn't upset anyone too much.
ATI92 Saturday, more glorious sunshine as it did for all six days except for an overnight thunderstorm at the campsite on Wednesday night. I won't pinch Nigel's moment, I was on walkabout when it arrived anyhow.
