48 Hour Photo Comp: Phantoms

Post by jalfrezi »

So, with today marking the 62nd anniversary of the iconic F-4 Phantom's first flight and the F-4 also being one of my personal faves, I want to see your best Phantom shots - static, flying, whatever.

what a conundrum, to go older and interesting, or modern and spectacular. A beast of a thing, a Phantom.

Just because its one of my favourite 'schemes' over the last thirty to forty years, I'll pop this in. Make mental allowances for the poor scan

I've tried to go with an F-4 that might not have been seen too often on here, being that it's on display at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. 63-7540 was transferred to 199th Fighter Interceptor Squadron Hawaii ANG in 1986 and having returned to the US mainland, it came back on loan from the USAF Museum to be displayed here. Since i took this photo the cockpit glass has been "blacked out".

Phantom is a rare bird for me.
The only flying example I saw was at Aviation Nation - Nellis AFB 2011:

My photos of Phantoms in flight are all pretty old so I finally went for this one which is exhibited at the excellent Pima museum. This aircraft did actually fly with the Thunderbirds from 1969-1974 before being used for various test work at Edwards. It looked immaculate.

Can't upload the image I'd like to as don't have access to my primary PC currently. So here's one I had available on my dropbox. A boring static photograph, but a stunning scheme and happy memories from a great weekend at Wittmund.

Sadly I haven't shot nearly enough of these wonderful machines.... That said, none look better than those in Fleet Air Arm Colours

For someone who isn't supposed to be a big Phantom fan, I do keep visiting bases were they live!

Think I'll go with this one. It was a great moment during Anatolian Eagle last year after a good days flying, 111 Filo took us up to their dispersal keen to show off their participating contingent. I think they also let slip they were bringing the pair across for RIAT too:

Shot down US Navy F-from the USS Kitty Hawk. in the Vietnamese Air Force Museum in Hanoi.

Brought down by AAA fire in 1967 - Both crew ejected, captured and then released in 1973

An amazing exhibit!

ImageHanoi Air Force Museum by Andy Heap, on Flickr

My best F-4 memory was at a bright and sunny but cold Spadeadam in Feb 1987 - a pair of 617 Tornados came across Wiley Sike West to East - very low and very fast.
and curving in from the North was a pair of Black tailed 74 Sqn Phantoms, rolling out behind the Tornados, and with a good head of steam up.
Crack - Kaboom - Crack as one of the Phantoms must having been going a little too quick as it went overhead . YES!!!
More than anything I remember the crisscrossing black smoke trails disappearing to the East and otherworldly noise of the vortices swirling around for quite a while afterwards.

Happy Days
