48 Hour Photo Comp: 2017

Post by Tommy »

Simple competition, this one.

Three best images from the year 2017.

No other rules or anything. So long as the photo is of something aviation-related from that year and was taken in that year.

Over to you!

Good idea for a comp. We won't run out for a bit yet.

Qatar 787 on approach to Edinburgh.

A damp squib of a show at East Fortune, in July not that you could tell by the weather. Could have been November. These were the only things that flew.

Mosquito at the de Havilland museum. This trip was made extra special by one of the volunteers allowing me to poke my head inside the prototype for a look.

Three taken within the space of a month during March and April 2017:

Tony Whitehead's beautifully restored Morane-Saulnier MS.317, G-MOSA, at City Airport Manchester/Barton on March 12, 2017.

My one and only time with a Lynx Nine on SPTA, March 21, 2017:

One of two ALAT Gazelles from 3RHC at Etain arriving at Middle Wallop as FRENCHARMY8340 on April 7, 2017 for Gazelle 50 - Threshold.aero's first event - the following day. The crescendo to a nerve-wracking several hours wondering where they had disappeared to.

With just the slightest bit of finesse, I might have made a little less mess.

Why 2017 particularly? Just interested. Going through my photos there did seem to be a lot going on though!

Fairford seemed to be busier than usual in 2017 and accordingly attracted a number of visits including this bimble with my brother in the Cherokee:

Italian Tornado IDS showing modern fighters a thing or two about "all weather" at RIAT:

I've always wanted one of these and this is the only time I managed it:

Spent most of my spare time in 2017 at RAF Marham trying to capture the Tornado from as many different angles as possible.

Man, what a year 2017 was! The Mach Loop was still full of surprises and I ventured down to Yeovilton for the first Navy Wings nightshoot.

Like many others I seemed to be very active in 2017, and it seemed to be a particularly good year in the standard of my photography (though that could just be rose tinted specs):

Italian Tornado at Cosford:

Rafale M at Yeovilton (Best fast jet display and scheme for me that year):

Like FarnboroJohn I'd wanted this shot and been chasing it for years and finally at Dunsfold everything fell into place:

Not really much reason or rhyme to it. For some reason (as many have noted, which is curious) there just seemed to be a lot going on. It was a pretty diverse year, and I sort of like seeing the diversity of what the hobby gets up to during the year. The final thing was picking a year where I think sufficient forum members would have had access to gear (opposed to, say, 2003 or 1987 or something), and yet still be far enough away that it’s a nice little trip down memory lane.

There’s not really a reason why I didn’t say 2016, or 2018 for example.

I've gone for a couple of the more unusual things I saw that year:
An Ecuador registered Islander at Baltra airport on the Galapagos.

Seen in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.

Closer to home, the Biggin Hill show.
