The lack of 'missed/low approaches' at RIAT arrivals has been a bug-bear with me for the last few shows. Part of it may be lack of fuel after pootling around with the Skyvan for ages, but (and happy to be corrected if I'm wrong...) I suspect that UK air show regs might prohibit participants who aren't flying display pilots from doing them. For instance, in 2019 barely anything did a missed approach except the Belgian F-16 demo jet..the other 2 that arrived at the same time just did standard, high, run & breaks to land. The Hunter went around a few times but I believe that had a specific purpose relating to checking the display distances/heights...

*If* I'm right (may not be) then the CAA/MAA would have kittens if they visited LN for the day! (Joke)

I do wish they'd allow more go-arounds from the static jets in particular, but there's hardly any do it now. If it's busy then fair enough...but arrivals days aren't *that* busy with less turning up than used to.
I totally agree - I found it very frustrating to hear such and such call up to the Skyvan, bimble about for ages with it, then come straight in and land. I have definitely noticed a correlation. There were far more missed approaches without the Skyvan operating. I'd be quite happy if they weren't but it seems to be a staple of UK airshows now and something to get used to. In 2019 it made me feel like the privileged few were detracting from the experience of the 1000s of us on the ground.

Anyway, great update. Really getting excited now.

If there's going to be a special USAF announcement then I cant see them sending anything for the flying display. More likely some long rage aircraft (B-52,B-2,B-1B), or something local based(KC-10, RC-135)/frequent in Europe (C-5, C-17). Wouldn't complain if any of those attended. Also wondering if the flypast plans with the red's were scrapped or are they still working on something.

I won't believe the SwHF and the A4 are attending until I can see them! Was going to go to Denmark to see them, the Poles and the Danish F-16 but the cost plus FRIAT was too much so that would be a big win for me!

Missed approaches might be discouraged to reduce the chance of incidents. Remember that Gulfstream on departures day....still not seen a photo of it on the net and I was watching as it was 'only a gulfstream'.

A bit wish listy but...hoping to see the lovely Qinetiq PC-21, completely cocked up my shots the last time I saw it on Arrivals.

Very happy with the Qatari Hawk aswell. This was on my wishlist, I went up to Leeming last December but unfortunately they didn't come out of the hangars so I intended to make another trip up there to catch them. Very happy I now don't have too.

The training theme line up has so much potential.

 Good one caper...

Good question to be honest, the show is looking just fine with what there is already (which, as already pointed out, includes a lot of USAF assets...)

...one or two bits from Qinetiq for the training theme...
Do Qinetiq still fly the prototype Hawk T1?
As mentioned no.

ETPS fleet is Grob 120, PC-21, DA-42, RJ70, RJ100, A109, H125, Bell 412 and an AW139 was joining the fleet.
They used to have a Gripen borrowed from SAAB with a cool tail as well didn't they - is that still around in the UK?

I believe all ETPS Gripen training is now conducted in Sweden. That particular JAS-39B did attend a RIAT, either 2008 or 2010 if I can recall. Was a nice tail on that.

when you look at it like that, i think its a good lineup. i think its a nice variety in the flying display

soloturk, french navy rafales and some other american hardware flying would be the cherry on top

Are they the only air arm with fathers?

What is this obsession with the USAF anyway?
If I were to hazard a guess:
  • USAF anniversary theme might have heightened expectations?
  • A-10 was originally scheduled to part-take?
  • F35A demo looks great?
  • Lastly, as good as the static currently looks, we are missing a star act (with regards to fighter demos). Maybe we have been spoiled in recent years with F-22, SU-27, Mig-21, Rafale, Mirage?
So to answer your question, not so much obsessed with the USAF, just heightened expectations with regards to fighter jets!

I’d say it does fall into the category, but each to their own of course! First time they’d have done the demo overseas (2018 don’t count), new 5th gen fighter, loudest in the line up, including heritage flypast. It would stand out in the hightlights. But the F-35 is one that divides opinion, some think it looks like a pig with lipstick on and some think it’s cool as!

Indeed we have been spoiled in recent years. However if you were to listen to some of the frequenters on this board, the last 20 years have been barren!

Yes, the F-35 is not pretty machine but its loud and from what i have seen in videos, the demo looks stonking!

Lets be honest, the A10 isn't exactly pretty either. Who cares?!

I know it's subjective, but a lot of people would say that the Austrian QRA demo, the Hungarian Gripen (dump and burn anyone...) and the Spanish Hornet definitely fit into the star item category. Others could too.

I for one certainly wouldn't put the Rafale for example on a pedestal above the Typhoon, Gripen or Hornet.

It's just my opinion, but I'm as excited to see the QRA demo as anything else on the list this year.

Genuine question but why doesn't 2018 count? Was it not a proper display? I also thought the same thing earlier when Sanicole claimed to have the first F-35 display in Europe.

Because it wasn’t the demo team (it was formed in 2019) and was a series of about 3/4 flypasts before joining with the heritage flight.

I thought the flypasts in 2018 were incredible tbh.

The USAF now perform a full aerobatic display with the F-35, its a proper display, not a few flypasts made up on the spot. You cannot compare the two.

As for the comment it looks like a pig with lipstick. If only it did, at least it would have some character, as it is, its a bland as a beige chipboard coaster. Its nothingness has no boundaries. And everyone's look the same.
