Macrihanish/Cambletown

Post by psquiddy »

Has anybody been up there?

I will be in the area in a couple of weeks - is it worth a visit?

Obviously there will be many stealthy ops in progress http://www.dreamlandresort.com/black_projects/machrihanish.html

I think the website that info is on is well out of date, as Machrihanish is now a business park with some of the runway still in use but it's no longer a military installation.I think you're more likely to see Biz jets going in and out of the place nowadays!

With a 1700m runway, I doubt you'll see many biz-jets either!

You may need to consult a map! You don't just drive-past Campbelltown (ex Machrihanish) Airport. Once you turn-off the A83 @ Lochgilphead you face just under 50 miles to the airport & 50 mls back to the same point, before you continue your trip! There was a time when it was worth-it.... but not anymore?

It must have been shortened a lot. It used to be one of the longest runways in the UK.

It has been, take a look at this link - the Aerodrome Chart shows some of the disused runway: http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/public/in ... id=89.html

At least NATS can spell the name of the aerodrome correctly.

I am only going to have a look as I will be in the area - I am not making a special journey to see the airport.

They could just be super stealthy.

Maybe they use "Vanishing spray"

That spray would explain a lot, right enough.

I keep waiting on one to appear in a USA museum all of a sudden. (The Aurora, not the spray!)

There was always talk of various "black projects" being tested by the USAF out of Machrihanish, although at the height of the cold war were unconfirmed. These days most of the Aurora projects are the SRxx and YFxx demonstrators just flying out of Nelllis AFB. One aviation journalist in particular went on a plane hunt as he had some evidence that one such vehicle existed from this project that was actively flying from Nellis.

The only thing you will catch going in and out of Campbletown/Macrihanish is the Loganair flight to Glasgow.
The rest of the place is dedicated to making wind turbines.

Really? Nellis is on the edge of Las Vegas and has housing estates very close by on several sides, and can be overlooked from a quarry behind the base. There also aren't that many hangars were you could hide such things, so I'd be very surprised if there were any projects of that nature there. (I've never seen any hint of anything, and I've been on base a few times in recent years).

Anything of that nature (if there actually is anything) will be at Groom Lake or Tonopah, which are much harder to view, so much better locations for hush hush stuff, or possibly Creech if it's unmanned.
