MAKS 2013

Post by spaceward »

Just had my monthly update email from Incredible Adventures . There's a piece about their tour to MAKS and includes this line........

"This year's show is set for August 31 and September 1 and will feature a rare appearance by the August 1st Chinese Aerobatic Team in their Chengdu J-10 Fighters. "

Anyone going to the Show know anything else about this team appearance ?

Best regards,
Ian

From the official site
Russian Swifts
Russian Knights
Russian Falcons (4 x Su27s)
Team Berkutsy
Team Rus
Chinese August 1st
Airbus 380
Swiss F18 (not sure this one will make it after the much publicised cancellations)
For me that is a superb start to any list
Got my russian visa last week and going off with Ian Allan
Anyone else with IA

I hope it is not too late to make travel plans to MAKS. I will like to bring along my wife and 2 year old boy. What is the best way to obtain the travel visa and how to get from Moscow to the air show venue?

thanks

Hi ,

You can get your Visa sorted quite quickly if you go to the Application Centre in person with all the relevant paperwork and payment but if your planning to travel in say 2 weeks time you'll probably taking it to the wire if you apply for it by Post.

As for travelling to and from MAKS, if your going on a trade day it's not too bad by train then free shuttle bus but on the Saturday and Sunday
( public days ) I'd buy a Car Pass along with my tickets and hire a Taxi to and from Moscow cos the public transport is really rammed to breaking point. I hired a Taxi to take us to and from Moscow to the 100th Anniversary Show at Zhukovsky last year and it cost me 1800 Rub each way which I thought wasn't to bad split between 2 of us.

Hope some of that helps.

Thanks. I read about the visa application. Unfortunately I have to give this year's show a miss. I am traveling the next 2 weeks and I will have to bring along the passport with me.

Attended Friday - weather lowish cloudy but no rain
Saw display teams that I have never sen before and possibly never will
Chineses August 1st team, Russian Swifts, Knights, Russ and Falcons (Su27s) .
Solo Mig 29, Su 34 and Mig 35 were joined by Swiss F18 and T50.
Altogether great line up but weather presented some challenges due to cloudy weather and sun position plus6 foot fence.
Attended Sunday - rain cleared up by 1200 so a delayed stert - great position on river facing north on river boat.
Limited and disjointed flying display due to delays and very low cloud but T50 duo and Rusian Knights were highlight along with Solo Su27, Mig 35 and Su 34. Airshow curtailed at 4.30.
Today went to Monino (excuse spelling) museum - WOW - lots of stuff outside and in very good condition.
My personal highlight was Tu95 Bear in all metal finish glinting in the sun - uncluttered and well posioned .
Very lucky to see an snap two Chinese IL76 ( ? ) - support for Chinese J10s - and Russian IL 76 on approach to nearby airbase.
Now waiting at Moscow airport for flights back home
Altogether great experience but would have liked a break from the heavy low cloud on display days

Hi frank,
Sounds like you had a great time at the show. I visited on Wednesday & Thursday with the limited flying displays but the weather was great for the aerobatics and a great "attack" display with Ka 52s , Mi 8 / 17 and Mi 26 landing and disgorging 2 assault trucks all with wiz bang crash !!!
Was it the Monino museum you mentioned you visited or was it a new Museum ?

Hi Spaceward
It was indeed Monino that we visited - I will edit my post

We were also treated to the helicopter airfield attack but I couldn't see anything on the ground
as we were on the extreme east side of the crowd line and the old tower blocked our view

What a shame, because it was brilliant imo. Saw it twice on wednesday & on the friday. Friday we were positioned on a little hill almost crowd centre where pretty much all the heli's flew directly ott

Hi Frank,

I know it's a bit early but are you writing a MAKS 2013 review for your trip ? They're always a great read with some great shots and info.

I went to MAKS on Thursday & Friday - and from the riverbank on Sunday.

If anyone is interested, my Trip Report is here:- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/moscow_2013.html

It also includes visits to Zvezda models, Monino & museum etc - plus Beijing afterwards....

Hi Ken,

Firstly apologies to Frank for asking about the Trip Review but I somehow got Frank and Flankerman mixed up ! Should have gone to Spec Savers ???!!!

I've just had a look at your ( once again ) great review of what I must say looked like a fantastic trip to both Moscow/MAKS and China, great photos and what a mouth watering visit to the Zvezda Model Company must ahve been.
I was lucky with the weather on my visit to MAKS as we went on the Wednesday and Thursday so getting some of the better weather of the week. While in Moscow I made my first visit to the Vadim Zadorozhny Technic Museum which I must say I was really impressed with. All the exhibits gleaming in a well lit building , although there are so many cars , bikes and planes that it's really difficult to photo individual items. I see that there are quite a few new Aircraft exhibits outside now which have all been saved from Khodynka , which incidently I also visited, only to find that there is nothing left at all from this once fantastic Museum. I even climbed the Razor wire to see if I could find any Panels or other items for souvineers but nothing ( apart from a cut finger ! ) although I did speak to the gaurd on the site office who said that most of the airframes had been dismantled , some taken to a storage location and the rest to the Technic Museum. A guy I know at IRKUT who lives oposite Khodynka told me that some of the stored airframes are to be restored and moved back to a small Aviation Park at Khodynka after the local residents including himself ,petitioned the Moscow Government for some kind of Museum / Memorial Park to Honour the first Moscow Airfield at the Khodynka site.
On my visit to the Technic Museum I "strayed" to the out off bounds area and had a look in the storage building which contained racks of Cockpit canopies, engines , access panels etc etc. After being rumbled I explained in my best Russian that I was an avid student of Russian Aviation and Engineering and was fascinated with the exhibits etc. The guy was really friendly and explained that Mr Zadorozhny has had quite a few of the ex Khodynka airframes dismantled and moved to a place about 100 / 120 Kms west of Moscow to a place I can't remember for the life of me where he said that Mr Zadorozhny was planning a new Aviation Museum. Make of that what you will .

Anyway , sorry if all that's a bit boring but thought I might share it with someone just in case anyones interested
