Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
I just got a message from a local contact that a Sea Fury has made a forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
Two people involved, no fatalities thank goodness - I'll add more info when I get it.
Goes without saying that I hope all are safe and well.

Blimey! The poor old thing ended up in an uncannily similar situation, a little over thirty years ago.

cambridgeshirelive is trash. they will have made that whole article from facebook/twitter posts with no actual investigation or knowledge on the subject. it really is the lowest rung of the journalism ladderDaveBr wrote: ↑Tue 04 Aug 2020, 6:00 pmNew candidate for the worst “journalism” ever.Vickers Warwick wrote: ↑Tue 04 Aug 2020, 5:27 pmhttps://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/c ... h-18715882

They’ve since re-written the article and it’s just as bad!

!'m glad the crew aren't badly hurt. But poor old 655 can't catch a break!

Good to hear the crew received only minor injuries from such a serious incident.
That is colossal damage to the airframe. And the stencilling on the side just forward of the cockpit reads, “Invincible”. Let’s hope she gets restored to airworthy.

It looked to be trailing a lot of smoke on take off, not being familiar with the aircraft I assumed that was normal. Such a shame, I was thinking to myself after it took off , what a fantastic sounding aircraft, I'd love to see more of it.

The official statement from the Norwegian Spitfire Foundation:
Yesterday afternoon, Norwegian Spitfire Foundation operated Hawker Sea Fury T.20 G-INVN WG655 had to make a forced landing due to an engine failure. Chief pilot Eskil Amdal did a very good job getting the aircraft down. Eskil and his passenger suffered only minor injuries.

I appreciate that they have no knowledge of the subject and nor would I expect them to. However, in the modern world 15 seconds on google will tell you, for instance, that there is no such thing as a "Sea Hawker". It's not the lack of knowledge that's the problem, it's the lack of care or pride or giving any sort of monkees...rockfordstone wrote: ↑Tue 04 Aug 2020, 8:11 pmcambridgeshirelive is trash. they will have made that whole article from facebook/twitter posts with no actual investigation or knowledge on the subject. it really is the lowest rung of the journalism ladderDaveBr wrote: ↑Tue 04 Aug 2020, 6:00 pmNew candidate for the worst “journalism” ever.Vickers Warwick wrote: ↑Tue 04 Aug 2020, 5:27 pmhttps://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/c ... h-18715882

that's the thing with them. the will bung a couple of tweets together and then add a sensational headline, stock photo and set it up as click bait. no need for any research cos they get revenue from clicksDaveBr wrote: ↑Wed 05 Aug 2020, 11:03 amI appreciate that they have no knowledge of the subject and nor would I expect them to. Re: Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
To be fair, I doubt many of us would do a good job of writing a news article, in a very short timescale, about something we knew nothing about. Given the repeated reference to a "false landing", I suspect the journalist has at least made the effort to have a phone conversation with someone who knows a little more about aviation. It's rather unfortunate that they misheard that key word, but if I was the aviation expert on the other end of the line, I'm not sure it would occur to me to emphasise the word "forced", lest it be misheard.
If you're after accurate reporting on a specialist subject, don't go to the local paper in the first place, especially within the first few hours of the incident. I'm sure there will be plenty of informed reporting in the normal publications, in due course, and if you want really well-informed detail, the AAIB report will eventually appear online.

Final start, run up, taxi, take-off and the sad end result - thank goodness that the pilot and passenger survived!

The term 'False Landing' seems to have come from an IWM Press Statement so presumably taken as an accurate description of what happened.Occam wrote: ↑Wed 05 Aug 2020, 12:57 pmTo be fair, I doubt many of us would do a good job of writing a news article, in a very short timescale, about something we knew nothing about. IWM Duxford have issued a statement
"There has been an incident involving a Sea Fury aircraft which departed from Duxford airfield this afternoon on a routine flight.
"The aircraft had to undertake a false landing, the pilot and passenger are receiving medical attention for minor injuries.
"The aircraft sustained significant damage and a fuel leak, an IWM Duxford fire team with specialist equipment and flight knowledge are assisting Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service at the scene."
Re: Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
Can't blame the journalist for that, then, but you'd have thought whoever released the IWM Press Statement could do better!Pen Pusher wrote: ↑Wed 05 Aug 2020, 1:16 pmThe term 'False Landing' seems to have come from an IWM Press Statement so presumably taken as an accurate description of what happened.
I just searched "false landing" in case it was a term I'd somehow never heard of, and it seems to occur in 3 contexts:
1. Reports of this incident
2. Wartime actions (generally naval) intended to mislead the enemy
3. Moon landing conspiracies
Re: Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
“False landing” dear oh dear what BS. Forced landing, emergency landing, wheels up landing.. take your pick of a more accurate description. But describing it as a false landing is imo just a way of trying to put a PC spin on what was a serious incident with, very happily, a miraculous escape for the two crew when you see the damage and crash site in person.
Personally I’m absolutely gutted to see this Sea Fury so badly damaged. It was one of the best display aircraft at Dx.

Agreed, its seems no more than a fluffed dictation to me. Forced is what it was, as we all know.Occam wrote: ↑Wed 05 Aug 2020, 12:57 pmTo be fair, I doubt many of us would do a good job of writing a news article, in a very short timescale, about something we knew nothing about. Somebody with no knowledge of aviation would take the typo at face value. Its neither here nor there.
Re: Sea Fury forced landing in Harston, Cambs.
It did occur to me that "false landing" would be a pretty good description of some of my early (and not so early) attempts to nail the round out...
