Yorkshire Auction House
Anyone see this last night ? An aviation fan had passed away and two rooms and a loft of models (made and still in the box), books, photos, decals etc etc was cleared from two bedrooms and sold off by his wife. Fascinating and, rather sad IMHO - they got just over £5000, makes you wonder what will happen to all my stuff when I reach the end of the line. "the skip" joked my wife.

Mine wasn’t joking.

These posts reminded me of the KABLE acronym advised to the shop manager at the museum a while back by the wife of a regular shopper; that made it onto a poster in the shop:

Just me but it's nicer to donate them to a museum shop as the proceeds contribute to the hobby that supplied so much joy and entertainment rather than call in the house clearence guys.
Love the KABLE concept

Donations are appreciated but during Covid the NAM Shop has been forced to start declining magazine donations, due to the sheer volumes being offered (no pun intended).
Sometimes a family's financial needs may require that funds have to be raised if at all possible.
In recent times another tag has been added to the museum's Twitter timeline and that is #SkipSave - you would be surprised at some of the items this applies to!

A lot of preserved railways are saying no to magazines as well. Apart from a few specialist titles, they don't sell. It doesn't matter if they're a complete set from the year dot, people don't want them. Better off in the recycling bin. A lot of books get recycled as well, especially the M&S coffee table style books.NAM Updater wrote: ↑Tue 22 Feb 2022, 11:30 amDonations are appreciated but during Covid the NAM Shop has been forced to start declining magazine donations, due to the sheer volumes being offered (no pun intended).

To be honest the saddest part is the look of disappointment on someone's face when you have to tell them that you're unable to accept the load of items that they've just turned up with in the back of their car!
Always best to check in advance about any donation, because otherwise it can cost the museum / venue to dispose of surplus items.
Strange times!!

And on that subject I’m overdue a visit to the museum (and it’s excellent bookshop!), so will most likely take a trip up on Saturday.

HH is spot on as usual - most magazines sadly have no commercial value - further, the 'Marks and Spencer Book of WW2 aircraft' type books also usually have to be moved on, regrettably a lot of charity shops are very sniffy about taking books now too so it becomes a bit of a problem - even at the municipal tip, most book donation bins have been closed for that reason. Finally I'm told that they can be problematic to recycle because of the glues used in binding...
That said, whereas we can easily sell more specific books and not the generic M&S books above, a fellow Museum can't sell specific stuff and instead welcomes the generic stuff as its visitors are mainly families! We swap!
Strange times indeed!

That's good to hear, I should be on site for most of Saturday so I will keep a look out for you - we're just starting to get more stock back into the shop, after some challenging times.Mike wrote: ↑Wed 23 Feb 2022, 12:14 pmOr in my case BABLE - Books Acquired Beyond Life ExpectancyNAM Updater wrote: ↑Tue 22 Feb 2022, 10:48 amThese posts reminded me of the KABLE acronym advised to the shop manager at the museum a while back by the wife of a regular shopper

TT, we now have a book table in Hangar where people can pick up the 'coffee table' publications, either for free or by offering a small donation!

Howard - please let us know if you’re interested in any complete sets of Flight International from the 1970s and ‘80s.NAM Updater wrote: ↑Wed 23 Feb 2022, 8:20 pmThat's good to hear, I should be on site for most of Saturday so I will keep a look out for you - we're just starting to get more stock back into the shop, after some challenging times.Mike wrote: ↑Wed 23 Feb 2022, 12:14 pmOr in my case BABLE - Books Acquired Beyond Life ExpectancyNAM Updater wrote: ↑Tue 22 Feb 2022, 10:48 amThese posts reminded me of the KABLE acronym advised to the shop manager at the museum a while back by the wife of a regular shopper

Re: Yorkshire Auction House
Thanks for the offer Richard, but we have a full set in the Archive and sadly no room to take any more.
