Ferté-Alais 2021

Post by Col. Chibani »

A little bit late, but I have been excessively busy these weeks.
And better late than never !

The traditional Ferté-Alais took untraditionnaly place on the last week-end of August.
I was there on Saturday, not the best date weather-wise, but I had some engagments on Sunday.
Found a good spot, on the edge of the runway, on the westmost end.

Nice location, with the Sun behind as the day goes on, but I am aware that some great topsides could have been achieved on the opposite side.

Thanks to an early arrival (10 am), I was granted with some PAF recconnaissance passes:

A quick visit to the static, with the much interesting cockpit of a Super Entendard:

A Donnet-Lévèque floatplane reconstruction, that was designed to fly/float, but I don't know if it finally managed to reach the sky/river:

Never been so many Mustangs at La Ferté !

Before the air display actually begins, Aero Vintage Academy (a pilot school based at La Ferté) performs aerial excursions.
It's the opportunity to test my "propellers" settings (1/200th, f/8, 100 ISO : @ 270/300 mm, results are correct, arm is still strong).

Then, the official opening, with the traditional "Irène" moto-glider, with a special taste this year, with the recent passing of Irène Salis.

And the first pages of the aviation history book pass before our eyes, with Morane-Saulnier, Blériot and other Deperdussin of the nicknamed "daisy cutters"

WWI was featured with 2 sets.
First with Fokker triplane and SE.5 replicas:

And then "Pterodactyl Flight", with 3/4th scale replicas, performing dogfights and even the "bombing" of an air base (unfortunately too far from me):

Between the wars, aviation performs a giant leap.

From the daring pionneers, as Adrienne Bolland, who crossed the Andes in 1921, in her Caudron G3 (the pilot in the Ferté airshow was actually a woman):

A magnificent Stinson "Reliant" :

The "Aéro-Club de France" flypast:

An Air France DC-3 (with its "hippocampe" / "seahorse" logo, nicknamed the "crevette" / "shrimp"):

Another "biplane daring woman", with this Po-2 of the "night witches":

And an historic flypast of french air force aerial transport:

The Transall showcases its short landing and take-off capacity (with included leaf blower feature):

There is then a "hole" in my photo-report, due to a "booze meeting" with some friends not seen for a long (COVID) time.
Apologizes for this uncompleteness.

So, after some invisible acts, the Spit PR Mk XIX follows:

The PAF is back, and so are blue skies:

Lovely shots of what is straight-up one of the most pleasant events on the European calendar. I'm very much hoping to go back next year.

Out of curiosity does anyone know why many of the ww1 replicas are 3/4 scale? I mean if you're going to the trouble of making one why not make it full-size.

I suspect it has something to do with what powerplant is available and cost effective?

In the particular case of the "Pterodactyl Flight" machines, I read somewhere that it was linked to them being classified as ultralight aircraft, and benefiting for the associated regulations.
