The Mighty MAKS (Picture heavy!)

Post by Wissam24 »

Well, what can be said about this show that hasn't already been said in our excellent review? It's got a different feel to it that, say RIAT. I've not been to Farnborough before, not in recent years as a paying adult in any case, so I don't know how representative of trade shows in general it is, but you can tell that the planes are there as exhibits and not as a meet. Certainly there was little foreign participation (and what Western aircraft were there left before we even got into the show!), and perhaps not being Russian speakers we were at a disadvantage (our Russian speaking guide asked about going on board the Il-76MD-90A early on, to be told "Yes, but it's full right now so wait", but later on Tom and I, sans guide, asked in English to be given a flat out "No") but seeing all of these aircraft that I'd only read about up til then was sheer heaven. In the end I managed to sneak, by sheer luck, a photo leaning against the nose gear of the Bear, and we went on board the Vomit Comet Il-76 and the Tu-144. Unlike UK shows though, there were no tat stands which was disappointing but not really a let down.

Below are a selection of photos from the show; the full lot, if you're interested, can be found in the Flickr album linked.

Excellent subjects Sam and a show I've always wanted to go to...the rude child in me wonders who the TU154 half way down the static in shot 22 which appears to have "fart" written on the side is operated by !!

It actually (and sadly) said FACT - Future Avionics Control Testbed if I remember correctly.

Thank you both!

Superb, must've been hard to just drag yourself away from the static.

Many thanks. It was difficult but actually the static was conveniently in one long line, so we had a break to watch some flying. However, as mentioned in the review, you're looking into the sun and the crowd is crazy deep, so that day was all about shooting the static while watching the flying out of the corner of your eye.

Certainly appears rammed body wise in there which must produce some frustrations in itself

The only issue we had with crowds in the static was in front of the attack helicopters, as they were letting people have a look inside them meaning there were huge crowds at that part. Otherwise, it was fine really, and there was enough space between fence and plane to get shots.
