D-Day mass drop at La Fière, Normandy

Post by DriesE »

The first week of June, I spent some time in Normandy during the commemoration of D-Day. One of the highlights was the mass drop at DZ La Fière on Sunday, including several Daks, a lot of C-130s and around 1400 paratroopers from different nations. Some pictures of a memorable day:

British troops did jump on Sunday, but they didn't bring their own assets.

And the BBMF and Red Arrows were also present in the area during other ceremonies on several occasions (pictures taken on the 6th in Arromanches).

Lovely stuff!

The RAF committed two C-130Js to the Sannerville military drop on the 5th (alongside French transports), but no aircraft to this drop (from memory, they usually send at least one Hercules). The Americans really threw a lot of this anniversary, and it was great to see European nations participating too. The Romanian Herc was a particularly nice surprise!

I can't even begin to imagine what was going though the minds of those brave men back in '44 , jumping from a Dak and then slowly drifting down under a hail of bullets . I take my hat of to them ,every last one of them .
Superb set.
