OMG not more OW Military......

Post by Dr Cake »

The last six weeks have been rather busy with airshows and holidays - I'm sure it's been the case for many of you too. As a consequence I've only just managed to sort through the OW military shots. Whilst very late I'd thought I'd share them...…

Very good! But, shouldn't that mark of Spitfire have three exhaust stubs either side rather then six?

You are correct, the Shuttleworth collection Spitfire MkV should have 3 exhaust stubs on either side instead of 6, however, the 3 stub type exhausts are far more costly, so instead they've fitted the cheaper 6 stub type, main reason why the BBMF Hurricanes fly with the 6 stub type exhausts.

Your partially right : )
Mk V Spitfires were built with Merlins with 3 exhaust stubs per side, but quite a few were re-engined during their RAF service with later marks of Merlin, with 6 stubs each side. Shuttleworth have a photograph of this airframe towards the end of the war in this configuration, and wearing these markings.

So it is accurate, and all credit to Shuttleworth, their researchers and engineers for their attention to detail.

That's news to me, I have to admit. I've never seen a war-time photo showing that.
