Garf's Cosford '19 - with a difference

Post by Ian G »

Doesn't June seem a long time ago, eh? Apologies for the lateness of the post but I thought I'd share a few images from my Cosford this year. I was part of the aerial photo crew at the show this year, quite an experience I'll never forget.

Our event started on the Thursday when the first foreign participants were due to arrive. You can imagine our frustration when we overflew Shawbury only to see the Gripen and Alca pair on the ground! Still, we managed to get some shot with the Czech Casa support crew before the rain set in. Unfortunately from then on, we were dogged by a few more hindrances including awful weather which meant that plans for Friday and Saturday were scuppered leading to two brief sorties on each day, rendezvousing with the German P3 on Friday and a one-shot only chance with Alca pair and Spitfire on Saturday.

All was not lost however as the phone rang later on Saturday to confirm that we'd been allowed to fly on Monday capturing departing aircraft. One quick call to my boss to say I'd be late to work on Monday and that was that sorted! We weren't sure what we'd see first and I spotted an aircraft on the horizon, thinking it was a jet in the Lichfield Corridor heading to Wales. A few minutes later and the Czech Gripen closed in on our camera plane, an absolutely mesmerising and mindblowing experience, as was everything else. Huge, huge thanks to Ironbird photography and to Bruce and Darren, our aircrew for the event. Fingers crossed for next year. . . . !

Bonus points if you can spot yourself on the platform!

Yeah, not bad I suppose...

Gripen ones in particular are some seriously top bombing.

Oh and yes, I'd recognise my red hat from miles away!
