BIAS 2019 - Bucharest International Airshow [PIC HEAVY]

Post by JJC »

Afternoon guys

I attended BIAS for the first time this year, the show being Saturday August 24th 2019. A truly fantastic experience, with most, if not all, types in the Romanian Air Force inventory present in the flying with solo displays, massed flypasts and role demos/set pieces throughout the 12 hour flying programme. A very charismatic mix of aircraft, in some incredibly eye-catching schemes.

Of course, the Mig-21 LanceRs were the stars, with 3 solo displays from the LanceR-C (including some incredible topsides) and an all too brief appearance by a 2-seat Lancer-B in the flying, along with several formation passes of varying sizes throughout the day. What a treat!

All types were displayed fantastically, including several punchy solo routines from the indigenous IAR-99 Soim jet trainer; several variants of the locally produced IAR-330 Pumas taking part in the show at various points; a nicely flown 3-ship of Yak-52s and a rather nice synchro performamce by a pair of Alouette IIIs. Heavies were also present, including several nice flypasts from one of the RoAF's An-30 Open Skies reconaissance aircraft and a very low show from one of the local C-27s.

The show went through from 9am-9pm, including some stunning twilight performances complete with flares and fireworks finale.

This is how to show your airforce off!

Anyway, on with the pics...

Cheers chaps!

The subjects and weather certainly helped

This show was a real mojo-restorer after what's felt like rather flat, grey season for me.

Free entry, no queues for entry, access to an enthusiast's area, free programmes, RedBull, chilled water and sunhats throughout the day. A truly excellent experience I can't recommend enough.

The RoAF's committment to, and enthusiasm for, showing off their capabilities to the public was very evident. Crews were with their aicraft/stalls from 8am right through to 9pm and beyond. There was a great atmosphere which British shows just don't seem to have anymore.

Thanks for the positive responses gents!

Editing this set was a learning experience for me, as I’m relatively new to Lightroom and this is the first major batch I’ve done.

Glad you all enjoyed these, I certainly enjoyed taking them!

A knock-out set! One show that I have now put on my must-see list.
The display line must be close to the crowd line because your max focal length of 300mm has yielded some tight images.

At the time most of the acts seem to display at a distance relatively similar to the UK, certainly when performing aerobatics. There was quite some variation through the day, however.

The Mig, for example, initially flew a routine very similar to that seen at RIAT but then seemed considerably closer during the next 2 performances (especially the curving topside and straight/level passes).

All of the images are cropped to one extent or the other, but 300mm was ample for most acts which was a nice change. Favourable weather conditions and the sun to your back for a good portion of the day also helped!

Thanks for the extra info. It'll certainly be one that I make every effort to attend when we're next in Europe.
