Shuttleworth 3rd Drive-in Airshow Sept 6

Post by johnr »

There was a very interesting line-up with a few a/c I had not seen, or heard of, before.

A variable day weatherwise. It started sunny then became overcast then cleared, a pattern that was repeated all afternoon. It ended up being sufficiently calm to fly 3 of the Edwardians, alas not the Deperdussin or the Bleriot. Unfortunately there was no evening sunshine to show them at their best.

The Spitfire and Hurricane started being overcast for the flyby as a pair but cleared just in time for the individual displays.

I decided to start with these so you will not have to scroll down through the mundane (less eye catching photograhically but interesting) stuff to get to them.

The show started with the Catalina

The Comet/Mew Gull display suffered from the poor light and the Comet's individual display, disappointingly, had no topsides

An a/c that I never new existed - the Civilian Coupe ( Civilian was the name of the company)

The Fauvel AV36 was followed around the sky by its towing a/c. A surreal sight

The Lunak glider was flown its usual verve. Sorry about the grain - it was up high and so was the ISO!

Desoutter and Moth together

There was rather drab looking Gemini

Hawk Speed Six

The Sopwith Triplane managed to find a patch of bright sunshine

I love the way you dismiss some absolute gems, many of which you won’t see display anywhere else on the planet, as ‘mundane stuff’, in favour of a Spitfire and Hurricane that you’ll see at pretty much any other airshow in the U.K.

Nice shots though

By 'mundane' I meant the quality of the pictures rather than the a/c.
Thank you. I must amend the main post

Thanks for posting another excellent set of photos, Dr. Cake.
I'm always happy to see your great Spitfire and Hurricane shots.
You have also presented a good mix of the earlier aircraft and some unusual designs, such as the Fauvel AV36 [I must admit, I've never seen one these!]

Keep your photos coming!

Whoops! Sorry, wrong post location - I was trying to comment on Dr. Cake's posting. Please just put it down to my advancing years!

John, yes, an interesting day and great to get some nice light at times. Unfortunately we'd gone before those nice Spitfire and Hurricane shots.
Garth - thanks for your kind comments.
