Red Arrows route home Sunday 21st August 2022

Post by broadstairs »

Yesterday I saw in more than one newspaper details of the Reds return from Folkestone Airshow which indicated that they would be returning back home past east of Dover and Margate at around 17:30 yesterday evening. Several people were on the cliff tops round Broadstairs waiting to see them however no sight or sound of them. I am sure there were good intentions in publishing this information but it obviously did not happen. We had a good view from Broadstairs and I could see right down the coast to St Margarets and the cliffs this side of Dover but no signs at all. Anyone any ideas whether this information was accurate or why this might have changed?

Weather, operational requirements, ATC requirements, fuel requirements, enroute navigational challenges, etc. There's a million and one reasons why it might have changed.

Looking at the ADS-B Exchange history for them they left Folkstone heading north west then tracked north via Rainham and Standford-le-Hope in to Southend.

Yes I understand the possible reasons but it did leave quite a few people sad thinking they missed them. Seems a tad daft to publish the flight paths in national and local papers online.

The RAF don't "publish" them in local and national news. They file NOTAMs, and then the press pick them up and advertise them as if they are fact.

This is a really old one but they look the same, see the bit I've put in bold - the press usually misses that very important bit!

We were treated to the reds and the typhoon passing overhead in Whitstable, made my day 😁
