VMM-162R Dartmoor

Post by RichCliff »

Hi,
I spent 6 days locally down on a cold Dartmoor during USS Iwo Jima's visit off the coast of Devon and Cornwall.
Due to the nature of the "visit", info about it was very slim and so out of the 6 days spent, only 2 days were fruitful.

It was a very frustrating time not knowing what was happening and when, speaking with the US Marines, most were tight lipped and would give very little away so it was a matter of standing there for 12 hours each day to see if anything turned up. The final day (Pickup) was much better weather than when they arrived which was torrential rain, hail, snow and wind.

VMM-162 "Reinforced" provided two MV-22 Ospreys and two CH-53E Sea Stallions for the transport of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit into Okehampton to use the ranges. On return a week later, they provided three MV-22 Ospreys and two CH-53E Sea Stallions. A very sporty arrival of the Ospreys on their first pickup took everyone by surprise including the sheep in the next field which had an unexpected Osprey land amongst them.

As ever, the sloped undulating HLS was a great place to see them operate from. Possibly the best time i'll ever have on Dartmoor.

Below is a mixture of the first and second visits.... #13, 14, 15 were taken at 18mm focal length

Remarkable shots. No 15 my favourite. Superb scenery as a backdrop and really brings out the power and presence of these machines. They are rather different to the Scouts, Gazelles and Wessex I saw on Dartmoor doing the 10 Tors expedition a million years ago.

18 and 22 hit the spot for me. I've seen some great sets of shots on this forum, this set is up there with the best - sensational!

Awesome set, well worth the effort. 1, 18 and 22 for me. All that activity must have frightened the life out of that hang glider chappie in 24.

What an amazing set - well worth the time spent. The action in number 6 does it for me.
