Edwards "Buffs"

Post by Ashley Wallace »

Shot at Edwards AFB, after driving 9 miles across Rogers dry lakebed, were these 2 B-52s. Many thanks to John for driving to see these and for the drive back to the main base down the Space Shuttles lakebed runway. I was absolutely amazed at how smooth it was to drive on.

This NB-52E was used to test the General Electric TF-39 engine for the C-5A "Galaxy" program, in 1965. The TF-39 was mounted on the right inboard engine pylon in place of the two J57s normally installed.

This RB-52B was used extensively for "Barrier Tests"

Interesting stuff. There's some nice bits & bobs tucked away at Edwards and Palmdale. Nice one Ash

They look like a nice couple of "fixer uppers" to me.

Nice shots of some very rare aircraft.

Thanks guys much apreciated. There was also a B-58 Hustler about 2 miles from these Buffs but was a long walk from the lakebed through cacti and other things, shame really as there rare things to get...

Is that the Hustler with the B-1 nose radar, seem to recall seeing an article on it in AI some years ago. I think they've recently reclaimed the two X-21s from the desert as well in the hope of making one good museum one.

Great stuff

Fascinating, if somewhat sad to see. Thanks for sharing Ash.

When were they taken Ash? And more to the point, did you steal any bits? :ninja:
