I got my trial run on Friday.........off with the caravan to Yeovilton for 2 nights, then back home on Sunday. Repack on Monday, paying special attention to liquid items in a tin!!,then off to Fairford on Tuesday. No work,no kids,no wife(its ok,she does'nt read this!),just me me me for a nice relaxing change.
Not a photographer at all, just love my fix of noise and fumes, and always have a good time with the guys I meet. Camping at the caravan club site,so its a 5 minute bike ride to the 27 threshold.
CANT WAIT

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
I was thinking exactly the same , this week is dragging and the beginning of next week will be similar I feel. I am ariving at Totterdown on Thursday and spending Thursday and Friday there and then Saturday and Sunday on the showground!
My list of things to take has slowly grown over the years form simply 2 things - money and camera in 2003 to 2 pages of camping, accesories and all sorts in 2009!
First aircraft I ever saw display was a Mig 29 at RIAT 2003. Was first time at an airshow and did not know what to expect , didnt even know what to expect in terms of display length and make up, didnt even really know if there was a display in the air just remember seeing a poster with a frined in our locality and deciding that tomorrow we would go there. Luckily frinds dad had been years before and warned us of traffic so we set off nice and early! Was wondering around in amazement at the static at around 10:30am when I heard a low rumble from the runway direction, I turned my head just in time to see a Mig29 Climb vertically into the blue sky I couldnt take my eyes off of it, when I eventually did I looked at my friend and he was still blankly staring into the sky with jaw gaping . We looked at each other with a "that was the best thing I have ever seen" expression and quickly made our way to the grassed area. From that moment I was hooked and have never looked back!!!

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
A slightly funny story from last year.
Everybody remembers the washout on Wednesday last year. So soaked and bedraggled after the days play I left P&V about 2pm. I then went to hotel to check in. No problems, got to room unpacked camera bag, hang-up wet clothes. Then got to clean clothes, T-shirts - check, Socks - check, Shorts - check, Trousers - che.......oh heck. Forgot to pack any trousers, I only had shorts, the trousers I wore at P&V eventually dried after 2 days so they were not usuable.
Decision time, decide to drive (sprint) to Swindon, buy trousers get back to hotel. Dressed reasonably smartly for dinner!
That packing list sounds a great idea.

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
Personally, it ain't the longest week for me, IT'S THE LONGEST 10 DAYS!
Week one (this one!) working at VLN....in Air Traggic, sorry!, Traffic..... Our Air Day on Sat 11th is a Duty for all staff, my first, here but really love the job......
Then early Monday morning off to RIAT for 8days of fun as one of the Volunteers (my 9th year, should be 11th, but was Best man a couple of times so that took precidence!)......brilliant!!
Forgot to add....last years packing: had jeans/trousers for the evening, but wore my shorts through out, just packed enough pairs too!!
As a foot note: Last year when HM The Queen presented the colours to the RAF plus the 90th RAF Flypast. She arrived, the skies cleared, she went undercover, it poured! She came out again, the skies cleared, parade takes place......as does the the Flypast. She goes back in for luncheon, it pours again!
T'was a mad day. Moreover, later that evening when it became clear that it had to cancelled.....it was as though someone had died.
BUT NOT THIS YEAR, IT'LL BE ON!!!

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
Like everyone I abolutely can't wait! Got a memory from last year I thought I'd share
Arrived at Kempsford on the wednesday afternoon in the driving rain...and had to put up the tent! After getting absulutely soaked during the putting up of the tent I was relieved to see it upright and complete, so unzipped the door to get in and shelter a little...to be welcomed by a very water filled tent! It was like a flipping pond So it was off with the boots and getting in there to bail it all out using a sponge! Don't ask me how long it took, it just went on forever and ever. What a way to start the weekend! Hopefully it won't be quite like that this time round
Cheers, Huw

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
For me it is the shortest week, so much work to get done before leaving for the UK on Sunday to get to Fairford on Monday that I don't know which day it is.
I actually need to ask the guys in DBH to postpone the show by another week so i can hopefully get everything done before I leave. I doubt it will work though.
TTFN (until next week anyway)

None of the above photos were taken by me, they were on a disc I found in a dustbin............
Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
I'm off on German exchange with my school and I get back next Friday, so hopefully the time will fly and then it will be RIAT!

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
Hi
I know the feeling so well its just a week to go to my arrival at Fairford, sounds along time but it isn't and this year just for a added bit of "fun" I've a few events to do before then. Namely a 250 mile run down to yeovilton on friday for whats looking a great show. immeadiatly after the show I'm driving over to Duxford so I can do legends on the Sunday. Back home that night, to d/l pictures into my Pc Work for one day Then off to riat!! must remember to pack my wellies this year last year I didn't! Riat is more than an airshow these days, I meet up with many of my friends old and new so its becoming more of a social event than aircraft one Lots of highlights to look and listen to at this year's event. One being Dan's comentary He is probably thinking please don't let me mess up. Its ok dan we will be gentle.....ish
Yes I learned to my cost years ago a check list isn't a bad idea i once set off and got 40 miles down the road before remembering I had forgotten the Tickets
See you all next week.
Ian

In 2006 we arrived at Fairford (last year of not being FRIAT) to discover I'd picked up the Farnborough tickets instead....
That was an expensive month!

Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
can't think of anything funny from last year, except the fact that it was sunny at the weekend
I do remember the hilarious rush backwards and forwards between the East and West P&V's back in '96 I think it was, the one with the May and the Mermaid, when they changed runways a few times before the first arrivals one morning, and then the Czech Hinds arrived in close proximity to the West P&V, where I elected to stay rather than join the rat race back to the East, it was a most memorable moment to see so many baseball caps and anything else not tied down take to the air!

Hmm, how about my arrival back in the grandstand from the North Side tour on the Friday with a massive grin on my face to chants of "STONE HIM" coming from Ian and Steve!

....strangest moment of 2008 was when literally everything stopped to listen to the radio as to whether the Sunday was going to happen. I swear you could have heard a Sparrow break wind....still make me shudder just thinking about last year.
This year will be great..

Dont wish your lives away chaps. Looks like I will have to miss a day to attend a family funeral.
Re: Welcome to the longest week of the year!
My mums funeral was on the Thursday before RIAT last year - had intended to take dad off for the weekend to take his mind off it a bit- didn't help getting soaked etc - as you say - "don't wish your life away."

Almost finished packing. Everything waiting by the front door, except for the perishables. Not leaving 'til wednesday.
Must remember the wellies. Last year I emptied the van of all the gardening gear, wellies included.
Silly me.
