UK Air Travel Disruption Due to Ash Cloud

Nothing majorly alarming, but the Icelandic Volcanic eruption has spewed out a vast ash cloud recently which has moved through the atmosphere towards the UK. Several airports closed and other individual operators delaying flights from some airports in the southern parts of the UK.

Just put the radarbox on and the UK airspace is shutting fast.

South of Heathrow there is a line of transatlantic flights going eastbound to Europe. There are hardly any flights showing anywhere in UK airspace east of Reading, one or two around Lands End. Absolutely nothing showing from around Cranfield to the tip of Scotland. There are 2 Ryanair flights, an Aer Lingus and a Malev out of Dublin and that's about it.

Looks like it's going to be a quiet day on the airways!

Pretty much everything here in Norway was shut down last night, and is expected to be shut down to at least 20:00 local time.

I remember watching an episode of air crash investigation about a BA 747 that flew through volcanic ash clouds which caused a shut down of all engines and acted like a fine sand paper, which stripped off all paint from the nose and leading edges!

Still some westbound transatlantic flights and some southbound flights passing over Penzance but nothing eastbound or northbound recently.

Lots on the ground to see!

A major pain to those who wished to travel. Volcanic ash does have some nasty effects on planes, with the 1982 BA 747 4-engine shut down being a notable case. So, safety first.

Just spoken to the office, it's bedlam. NATS decision to close airspace, longhaul inbounds being diverted to Europe or returning to point of origin. Hope it's all sorted by the time I get in for my shift tonight.....at least I'll get some quite time for a sleep later

Is it possible to see the Ash cloud or is it too high, I live in the North West.
