"Dani" Star of the Stars in Souda Bay

Post by Crossbow »

Hello

Early September I visted Souda Bay/Crete for one week.A Base I had been before some 20 Years ago
when they still flew the mighty Corsairs here. The week was great and also saw a returning Visit to my
friend "Dani"(former A-7 Pilot from 336 Mira Araxos)-You may remember his Pics from him I took on his
last Flight with the Type in September 2008.He then went to Arizona for Training to the F-16 Block 52+
After finsihing he promoted to Captain of the HAF now based at Souda Bay flying for 343 MIRA "Asteri"
-stands for Stars.(The Island where he is born)

Here with him in his Corsair(Painter of OLYMPOS spec A-7) back in 2008

The other Day he flew in a T-seater when I waited for him at Runway 29

The Wing is very busy operating about 40 F-16s with 2 SQDs 340 and 343 MIRA

During one Day Dani was the Supervisor in the Tower/ATC where he waved me up to pay a Visit too
(at the time I needed a little break...relaxing at the BBQ-Sqd Area drinking a Greek-Coffee named Frape)

343 Mira operated F-5s before...nice one in his Sqd

On our last Day we did some privat shooting for Dani-Here as the Alien-Intruder wearing the new US Helmet

Wow, the largest air force in Central Europe isn't involved in one of the most important air operations NATO has faced in the last decade, that's frankly a disgrace.

Why are we bailing them out of their Euro problems?

Well Tony....time will tell...New Defense Cuts soon:A-7 Corsairs are now to retire in 2012!!!
346 MIRA "Jason" already disbanded...The new DEMO-Team "Zeus" possible will not go ahead.
No Cross-Country Flts by HAF-Jets anymore....So these are the bad News!!
I know for now.
but thats not the End I think.

Wow the A-7s are going next year, that is upsetting, especially if they don't get out to the shows next year!

"Dear" TonyO
HAF was involved in the operation in many significant ways!!!
First of all EMB-145H AEW&C from 380 Sqn were operationally involved in the OUP. It participated from the very beginning, it flew mostly with the French and Qatari Mirages!!! It worked alongside to the USAF and NATO AWACS in nearly equal terms (due ti capability performance)
Another VERY important contribution to the NATO Operation was that HAF's Bases such as 115 C.W. (Crete), 116 C.W. (Araxos), 120 OTW (Operational Training Wing) Kalamata,131 C.G. (FOB AKTION) and Radar Stations were directly involved and used providing vital support to the OUP!
In the meantime Hellenic Navy Frigates and other support ships were part of the Naval Task force assigned in the theater of Operations!!
If all the above mentioned does NOT show SUPPORT and INVOLVEMENT then what does?????
Despite the fact that Hellas is experiencing a major financial crisis, being a faithful Allie has done so much for the cause. We have done so much and we got nothing in return. We didn't "negotiate" our participation as other "allies" in the region did and we were the allies that could be trusted.
Why i know all these? BECAUSE I WAS ONE OF THE HAF PERSONNEL THAT GOT DIRECTLY INVOLVED!!!
No disgrace there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To mine opinion DISGRACE is to express opinion (especially a negative one) when you have NOT a clue of the true facts!!!!!!
To answer your last question...why you "help" us with the financial crisis, well because your governments are making HUGE profits out of this crisis!!!!!
If these profits doesn't reach your bank account....ask your politicians!!!
