Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
For a long time the talk has been that Farnborough is fully booked during the Olympics with 300 slots a day. Does anybody know when that period starts and finishes.
With the opening ceremony just about a week away, has anybody any thoughts on when what we might see in the way of VVIPs, the really important guys. Is it a fair assumption that before the opening ceremony we can expect the arrival of some heads of state and other very important people? Where do you think.? Will Heathrow will be welcoming or will even they be expected to use Farnborough, Luton and Biggin or Northolt?
What about important events such as the 100m does that increase the VVIPS?
All questions that may not have answers but I’m interested in what people think.

Think it has already been published that while HAL can provide appropriate facilities for VVIP's arriving on scheduled flights,Heathrow cannot provide extra slots for unscheduled VIP movements
Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
Traffic is starting to pick up already with the peak expected to be the 26th July. Farnborough, Luton, London City, Biggin and Stansted seeing the majority of the extra GA flights.

It's all biz-jets which is a shame. Not being into biz-jets myself.
Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
should be a fair few bizjets coming into Southend in the next week or so as well

Presumably Obama will arrive on AF1 any idea where he will be going. I have herd that its Stansted in the past but have no idea
Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
It seem most was just hype as far as Farnborough was concerned.....excerts from a thread on exactly this subject on the Farnborough Aviation Group dated June 8th,
"The latest news from TAG today re Olympics traffic. The period 21JUL-15AUG has currently some 900 traffic bookings. Basically, rather disappointing when you take into account that the 900 movements includes all the regular Farnborough traffic as well."
"900 movements. Hmm, that would be 36 movements per day on average. 18 landings, 18 departures. Given a 15 hour operational day, as we have on weekdays.. looks like just over one departure, and one landing per hour...Does not sound a whole lot....?? "
"To my surprise it would appear that the movements booked to date reflect about 50% of the similar period last year. Thus we can see no indication at the moment as to whether the Olympics will produce a movements bonanza, or whether the massive control imposed by the powers that be prove to be an overkill exercise.. Still time for the bookings to come flooding in,

Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
All sounds a bit disappointing although seems to be some contradictioins flying around
one post saying traffic already picking up and Eelmoor who I look to as the expert on all things Farnborogh painting a very gloomy picture
Could Olympic movements really be less than for an average day?
The Farnborough link suggests that business jets are having a really bad time, yet Bombardier and Cessna have been publicising major sales in recent times.
This was the Netjets publicity from last month which doesn't sound too unhealty at least for Netjets
NetJets Inc. said it plans to buy up to 425 aircraft from Cessna Aircraft Co. and Bombardier Inc. BBD.B.T +0.77%worth up to $9.6 billion, the largest ever purchase of private planes and a boon for an industry that has struggled since the onset of the global recession more than four years ago.
The order includes firm orders for 100 planes from Bombardier and 25 from Cessna, a unit of Textron Inc. TXT +0.37%NetJets, the world's largest operator of fractionally owned business jets, said the new planes are the first that it helped to design, as part of its Signature Series, and are bigger, faster, quieter and can fly further than previous, similar aircraft. The unit of billionaire Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. BRKB +1.41%said the purchase is part of its plan to continuously renew its fleet of more than 725 aircraft.

Im far from an expert on Farnborough however other people an the Farnborough Forum seem to know quite a bit about these things ! I think in reality the whole Olympics has been over hyped, reports of empty hotel rooms in London during the games etc are abound, news reports about Heathrow having its busiest day ever yesterday, whilst not untrue , looking at the numbers though it was only 2% busier than the same time last year ! and we didnt have and Olympics last year !

Did actually find the HAL remarks re VVIP's
"VIP passengers, such as Heads of State, will be able to utilise our VIP
facilities. Due to lack of airfield capacity at Heathrow, charter flights
and private jets will use other airports such as Stansted."
So if you are at the very top of the food chain (and probably also dependant on which country you are head of !!) LHR may be a possiblity, although have heard of nothing of interest planned

Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
a few extracts from recently publiushed web pages
Of an estimated 120 expected (heads of state), only 70 foreign leaders had confirmed their attendance as of last week, mostly for the opening ceremony on 27 July. The experience of past Olympic Games is that many will leave it to the last few days to decide, so preparations have to be set in train as if they were coming.
Slots for private jets at small airports near London, such as Farnborough…. are quickly filling up

My understanding is that the majority of the Governmental aircraft will be using Stansted, Next Friday (Opening Ceremony) quoted as 'it's going to be mental!'
No doubt lots of interesting photo-threads (Olympics related) will be appearing here and elsewhere from next week onwards!

We were told here in Farnborough in March that very few slots were available at Farnborough for the games period as most had been taken !! we then found out that hardly any had been issued and now they are saying they are filling up quickly ! I suppose time will tell wether porkies are being told

Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
I’ve been doing a bit deeper hunting on line and two points stand out:
Many potential Olympic Bizjet Visitors have been put off by security measures. They don’t fancy being shot down because their transponder broadcasts the wrong signal
Important people don’t like being constrained by slot times that they have to request months in advance.

I started one on the non aviation topic thred as there are quite a few super yachts arriving in London between last weekend and next Friday, as well as 15+ tall ships. As im typing Bill Gates yacht Octopus is waiting Mid Stream outside East India Dock. If anyones interested ile continue to post them there or start a new thread. Incidently the Danish Royal Familys yacht will be arriving Thursday and it looks special !

Would that be Lockheed Super Contradictions? Great, have never seen one of those!!
Re: Olympic Period Bizjets, VIPs and other unusual visitors
A lot of airfields have had to book all their slots in the system in advance, or they would have lost them to other airfields.
So that means that they have the slots they then just need the aircraft to fill them, I gather Biggin and Farnborough are doing rather well

Where did you gleam that nugget about transponders from?

What news from the Olympics?
All seems to have gone very quiet on the Olympics news. I have the next two days off planning to do Farnborough but it looks quieter than a normal day. All links to the super spreadsheet seem to have vanished and there have been very few reports of anything. I could get up really early but Stansted seems a hassle and Luton presumably will be impossible to park down the lane. Anybody got any interesting Olympics news
