3RD March: First Air To Air

Post by Lloyd H »

Well a very early start yesterday after only 3 hours sleep, bit of a killer but well worth it. Arrived at Bidford only to find the viz to be pretty poor, so we postponed our take-off until 0900. Didn't take the camera up with me on either of the flights down or back so I could fly both routes, apart from the take-off & landing obviously. Dodging the cloud on the way down was a bit of bugger, flew most of it at around 1000-1500ft before Ben took control and landed at Compton Abbas - bloody bumpy little strip but a fantastic airfield.

So after a thorough briefing from Dean explaining all eventualities , losing each other, wrong frequencies, how to move into position safely etc we took off for our first sortie as a 'stream' before joining up with Dean in the Pitts S-1T Special. Its a shame the weather didn't improve like it was promised, you can see how bad the viz is in some of the photos. Lots of bumping around, being out of balance and looking through the viewfinder made me a little queasy I must admit but it was a fantastic first experience for me and hopefully won't be my last.

I know its not the heavy metal air to air shots that everyone likes to see but everyone has to start somewhere, small steps and all that. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, it has made me realise just how hard it is though - especially when your strapped in with your harness. It makes turning around etc very difficult.

Thanks for looking C+C welcome.

Nice work Lloyd,i myself did my first air-to-airs on Saturday and can attest to just how difficult it is.
Thought it would be a walk in the park....how wrong was i!
Gutted that i cant post mine as lap-top is dead and cant fathom out why desk-top doesnt let me copy and paste.
In the mean time please have a look at www.flickr.com/photos/jaysoncork
In light of our collective successes lets hope theres better to come.....regards,Jay.

Despite the poor viz you've come away with some excellent shots, well done.

Pretty good if that's a first time

You perhaps need to bring the shutter speed down to complete the prop disc.

Would be interested to know what the camera ship was and what camera and lens you're shooting with as well as the settings.
