Spitfire MK356 gets a new paint scheme

Post by tommo999 »

Looks like MK356 is getting a new scheme. Also looks like we no longer have a silver Spitfire

Speaking of silver Spitfires, I've just finished Tom Neil's book 'Silver Spitfire', damn good read!

True, but MK356 looked better

I've seen rumours on Key that Richard Lake's XVIII SM845 is to be painted silver when repaired, hope that's true!

The D-Day stripes don't look wide enough?

They aren't but they are accurate for ML214 which is what MK356 is painted to represent. The only photo I can find shows very narrow stripes. 12" as opposed to 18"?

Interesting. Looks like whoever painted the stripes ignored, or perhaps didn't see the spec., although I understand that the ground crews were given very short notice of the requirement to apply them.

Putting aside the disappointment of losing the silver scheme (it's only a couple of weeks ago that I highlighted it as my 'best looking Spitfire' in the 'Merlin / Griffon' thread!), I have to say that the new scheme looks great, and suits the Mk IX very nicely.
And as the smart ship grew,
In stature, grace and hue,
In shadowy silent distance grew the iceberg too....

I note from that link that it has a white spinner in the old photos and drawings. Lets hope that gets painted too as it might improve the look - a red spinner with camo looks grotty.

I suspect that the spinner hasn't been repainted yet. It should be Sky.

Short notice and also given the lack of resources many were applied with brooms and yard brushes - forget the razor sharp masked edges we see today and we all strive for in our models!...

Quite. And at Oshkosh this year a C-47 was painted with D-Day stripes in a reenactment, and that's how they did it. Not a straight line in sight!

Looks very nice can't wait to see it next year, The reason the Mk IX was painted is because the Mk V was ment to be painted instead but that not ready now till next september so they done the Mk IX instead so maybe the year after it go back to its silver scheme.
