Sugarland Express

Post by Bjorn »

Hello everyone!
Long time since my last visit here. Thought I should show you some samples from a couple of photo flights I did last year with the well known Douglas Invader “Sugarland Express”. The aircraft was previously with Scandinavian Historic Flight in Norway for many years, but is now owned by Jan Andersson and based in Sweden.

If 12 doesn't get photo of the week then there is no justice, it's epic.

The whole set is pretty fantastic.

Great set of photos, another vote for number 12 from me too.
The Invader is such a lovely aircraft and I really hope Sugarland Express graces UK skies again soon.

Wow! This is an amazing set, but shot 12 made it possibly my favourite thread to date this year!

My favourite warbird of them all and so beautifully captured here. Photo 12's immense but the whole set's glorious, really!

Absolutely superb!

Never even knew there was an air-worthy Invader this side of the pond! Got to admit one of my all time favourite WWII aircraft when I was a kid and these shots bring back memories of attempting to build an Airfix model of this a/c, suffice to say made a complete hash of it!

Bjorn, those are amazing! Quite aside from the amazing #12 there are a load of beautifully composed and seen pictures. Wonderful!

All the best,

Anthony.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked the photos, and especially #12 !
#12 began as a wish from Jan that photographers should try to get good photos from the ground when he made simulated bombings with his P-51 on airshows. That proved not to be easy and the results weren't very convincing due to bad timing, wrong angle, distance etc. So we came up with this idea instead. The photo is taken from the back of an An-28 flying low over Västerås airfield. The guy on the ground who was responsible for the "bombing" was lying under a flame suit right in line with us so the timing would be as good as possible. We made a dry fly-by first to see that our distance from each other and the altitude was ok.
The explosion itself was quite intense. I can see from my series of photos how the Invader (the photo after this one) moves from the heat wave, and the second later how all my photos are blurry from us shaking. Our pilot even said he could feel the heat in the cockpit of our photoship *
*Photos taken from the ground show that it was very well timed and with safe distance ;-)
