The Mustang won't do what a Spitfire does, but it does it over Berlin.

Does this dampen plans for the return of the Air Fete?

Fair to say not many people expected RAF Mildenhall to be the base closing! Really sad and shocking news.

Surprised it lasted this long given what we have achieved at Brize Norton consolidating. Though Lakenheath for me would have been the natural one to go with the F15s leaving the UK for good, perhaps given its hard hangars that was why it is the one to remain.

Two squadrons of F-35A will be based at RAF Lakenheath from 2020, hence why Mildenhall is closing not Lakenheath.

Maybe more use to be made of Fairford as it a long way to tank stuff if needed with the KCs in Germany?

Oh Bu**er. I didn't think they'd close the Hall, god knows what effect that will have on the local economy.

Massive shame to see Mildenhall closing, I really do need to get myself over soon. I assume the MV-22, KC-135 and MC-130J fleets will be reassigned to Europe bases

Both the 100 ARW (KC-135) & 352 SOG (MC-130J / CV-22B) will be moving to Germany. However the USAF RC-135 deployment will be reassigned within the UK, so presumably at RAF Waddington?

What will we do for side-ons of KC-135s now?

My guess is that the RC's go to Fairford.

This could be what Marshalls want. And Cambridge being housed over in a few years.

Did merit a brief mention on BBC News24 about half hour ago ( in between blanket coverage of Paris )

Whilst no-one likes to see a base closed the closure of one of Mildenhall or Lakenheath has been on the cards, given such I would rather see the loss of Mildenhall and some of its assets and the retention of Lakenheath with its F15s (with the promise of F35s in 5 or 6 years).

Well all the nice folk coming to the UK will have a home now in Mildenhall New Town.
I bet the RAF won't want it, and it will be to expensive for Marshalls to run.

Just like they are spending umpteen million quid on a new runway at Waddington. A sure sign that it's going to close in the next couple of years.
