Wyton Canberras 1983 and 1984 - Updated

Post by comet4 »

I believe that RAF Wyton was one of the last, if not the last, Canberra stations. I visited Wyton in 1983 and 1984 on their open days and, as expected, there were plenty of Canberras on display.
Here is a selection from those 2 days. Unfortunately, the negatives have suffered over the past 30 years.

The variety of paint schemes, on just one type, is enough to make you weep. Glory days, indeed.

same here. but not too keen on silver though, I guess I was spoilt by spending 4 years looking at Buff and camo ones between 1988 and 1992... :yahoo:

Glory days indeed. The last RAF Canberras ended their days at Marham, the PR9s, PR7s and T4s transferred there with 39 Sqn, the last three PR9s retiring at the end of July 2006.

Some beautiful aircraft there, would have loved to have seen the Short SC9 and got some pics of a T22 as well. Superb

You never saw the SC9 mate? I'm shocked.

Kicking myself I never did a Wyton show; spent a few hours outside over the years, trying to nab the (then) very elusive Nimrod R1s more than these beauties though. Great to see, wonderful days to be doing what we do.

Is that frame on the gate guard really gone, It look great 1.5 years ago when I stopped to take a few photos.
Cheers

Grovelling apologies! My memory is failing me - XH170 is indeed the only survivor of the 3 one-time gate guards.

Happy days. Did the '84 and Canberra 40th Birthday shows. Always a nice base to visit, inside or out.

Here are a few more pictures of the Canberras on display at Wyton on those two open days.
Sorry if there is not much variety in these pictures!
