Any suggestions much appreciated, thank you..

If you are looking for a 'budget' cropped sensor, have a look at the 1300D (18mp) for about £450. I have no experience of it and my previous cropped sensor was a humble 600D with 550D as a back up body. I did a quick look on line for the 1300D and 1200D as a comparison with the 1D Mk2N. The 1200D at 18mp is a good, marginally better piece. Marginal. No idea about weight, if that is really an issue. I'd always try and go for something that will stand up to a little bit of 'in the field' action.

If you can stomach it, look at the 7D Mk2. It's expensive... A real beast in comparison with my old bits of tat.

Not sure if any of this helps. Be interested to hear back what you decided to go for.
Now officially qualifies as a 'regular' at Famous Dave's - El Centro

I was in a similar position to you, as I also had a 1D IIn for a very long time. But before this airshow season I decided to upgrade to the 7D Mark II and it's been worth every penny so far if your budget stretches that far.

I can't imagine the EOS M being any good for Aviation unless it's static.

..unless you want to hold lenses like this??
