JARTS. 2 Tornados to Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre

Great news. Two Tornados will be arriving at Newquay by early summer 2018.

Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre are delighted to announce another exciting development for 2018.

Two additional aircraft will be joining us by early summer, as we have a wonderful joint arrangement with the RAF JARTS Squadron (Joint Aircraft Recovery and Transport Squadron)

The two aircraft in question are:
Panavia Tornado F3 ADV serial ZH553
Panavia Tornado GR4 IDS serial ZA 398

JARTS will be making use of our VC-10 and BAC 1-11, plus the two Tornados. They will train personnel from all of the UK’s Armed Forces, delegates from the forces of other friendly nations, plus Cornwall Airport’s own Fire Service in aircraft recovery and crash management procedures.

They use an amazing airbag lifting system to recover large aircraft, which keeps the airframe exactly level and puts much less pressure per square inch on the aircraft skin surface than that of an average person’s footprint. The exercises are a crucial element in the training process in readiness for real life events. The aircraft are treated with the utmost care throughout the exercises and obviously unharmed or uncompromised in any way. During these exercises our visitors will be welcomed to watch how this huge logistical operation is performed.

We see this as another big step forward for us. Delighted to be having two additional fast jets to display – which brings the collection right up to modern times.
Also delighted to be able to help in such important training operations whilst building relations with the RAF.

We continue to try to move in the right direction here at Newquay. Making the centre here an interesting yet fun place to visit when down in Cornwall. But also a place of learning and hopefully inspiring people to look seriously at aviation and consider all aspects of careers in the industry. This new link with the RAF JARTS team further helps theses goals. We have the Lightning back from Cosford in June for display here. The 100th tail was meant to be going to the Marham heritage centre or II(AC) HAS/ OPS complex can't remember which got feeling it was Lossie

Obviously a while back now, but IIRC there was months of procrastination on the jet's future after the final bird-strike that saw it grounded at RAF Manston. The 'final' plan saw the GR4 minus tailfin taken over the road for torching at the Fire-school. Tailfin was set to be roaded back to RAF Marham for mounting outside a 2Sqn facility? Anybody know more about what really happened?

Not really for the last question, apart from they don't burn airframes to a pile of ingots anymore.

And they both left Manston in Mid February/Early March time by road.

Arriving at CAHC today as part of the JARTS arrangement was Hawk T1, XX240.
Previously serving locally with 736 Naval Air Squadron before entering a period of storage at RAF Shawbury the airframe arrived at Newquay by road along with additional parts for the Tornado F3 and GR4.
XX240 still wears these markings and will be on display at CAHC (apart from short periods when JARTS will require her for training).

Tailfin was set to be roaded back to RAF Marham for mounting outside a 2Sqn facility? Anybody know more about what really happened?

It definitely went to 2 Sqn's HAS site at Lossiemouth, no idea if its still there.
