The current live Vulcan situation really does highlight the problems in trying to keep one of the last three runners alive, and to be fair, the difficulty in choosing a home for 558. The ideal place is a private, quiet airfield, or a site at least with a fairly disused but decent condition long runway - obviously Bruntingthopre, Elvington, Dunsfold are good examples. But the current planning trends in this country undoubtedly puts places like this under threat from housing - as has already happened at Dunsfold. Choosing a more busy commercial airport, is even riskier - namely cost of occupancy, further development and access due to security. Someone really needs to look seriously in to how to disassemble, move and reassemble a Vulcan if we realistically are going to have the three runners still around in the decades to come.

I'd imagine you would be looking at a seven figure sum to move a Vulcan and then rebuild it to a fit enough state to be able to run, fast taxi in its new home. The owner of 655 has according to the social media rumour mill said the plan for 655 is for it be on display at the planned new development at Wellsbourne, does not sound good for its future as a runner but at least it does not sound like the scrap man is about to be called in.

Only not cost effective if a) no one’s buying tickets or b) they are running the jet on single malt whiskey.

Unless they’ve got extortionate overheads they should probably at least break even even with only a dozen or so people.

Again, I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the airport was gifting VTTS, recovered / waste fuel.
i.e. the fuel for the engine runs was free of charge.
Eccentric, idealistic, and creative, sometimes to the point of delusion..

Rumours are just that, any news on 655's future will come from 655 MaPS and nobody else.

I’m pretty sure the airport don’t have a capacity to store/transfer waste fuel that’s been drained from an aircraft. It requires a separate system & Bowser that is solely for draining so as to avoid any cross contamination Or, after every drain, the bowser has to be completely flushed to remove any trace of the waste fuel.

VRT at Southend have their own bowser which they use to for waste fuel collection and storage for use on 426 when they run it.

Would say that will be the case, getting cheap fuel from the airport.
Would be the same at Brunti with fuel recovered from the jet liners that land there for breaking.

Is that right then? The aircraft at 'Brunti' get all their fuel for free?

It has been true at times in the past, e.g. when the VC10 fleet were being scrapped, but there hasn't been any coming in for scrapping for a few years now, and with GJD gone I doubt any more will arrive. I have read that David Walton buys a supply of fuel in bulk from time to time and it is eventually paid for by whatever fund raising can be done - presumably mostly from the open day entrance fees. It wouldn't surprise me though if Mr Walton doesn't get all his money back and partially pays for it himself.

If VTST are using waste fuel, does that not mean the fuel system is rendered unfit for flight (I know that she will ever fly, but hypothetically if there was a slim chance of a ferry flight, wouldn't having used waste fuel be a problem?)

My understanding is the groups buy this fuel from the bulk purchase.

VTTS are using new fuel, not waste.

Regards to the previous replies, DSA full passholders are limited to escorting 10 people per pass in non sensitive area's upon all training modules being completed (sensitive being the terminal area/stands) so from CP1, to the test bay in a bus along taxiway alpha they avoid that. VTTS has to pay for its full pass holders and its not cheap (nothing to do with DSA, its set by securitas.)

Set by Securitas perhaps, but surely factored in the decision to go the DSA?

Thanks for clarifying - my understanding too. Hopefully this is an end to a rather shambolic series of claims and 'concerns' about fuel.

The only thing that was factored into going to DSA was the lining of pockets.

Where did I say free fuel, the word cheap does not mean free,
So DSA are not helping with fuel either then if by the sounds of things they,

Yes went Shambolic as soon as you stuck your nose in again.
Cheap Fuel .not paying the market rate,
Not good if 558 is having to pay the market rate. When in a statment made by them suggesting they would be useing cheap washout fuel.
Again stuck outside and still having to cough up for fuel, great move to Doncaster was it.

The original point was that VTTS were being 'gifted' recovered / waste fuel. You followed up to include that recovered fuel would also have been available at 'Brunti'.

Cheap vs Free isn't the important point - it seems neither party is using recovered / waste fuel at all.

That's been clarified now, which was really the purpose of the question.

But vtts are not useing recovered fuel like they said they would,
Some at Brunti do. Simple.

When did VTTS say they were going to use recovered fuel? Speculation on this forum isn’t fact...

Mods: please move to another thread if you think it not relevant to the conversation.

That as been in the pipeline for a while, its good news in some ways,
The warwick council said they would compulsory purchase the airfield.
This new move to try and kill off the local industry could be the trigger for this plan by Warwick council. :yahoo:

Is that right though?

Are Warwick council involved? Did they ( or Statrford-upon-Avon council ) actually say they'd compulsory purchase the site? How would that be funded?

These people certainly think there's something to worry about:-

Save Wellesbourne Airfield

( as per Full Flaps' comment, is this subject better off in another thread?)

Stratford District Council did say that they would consider a CPO, but whether they will remains to be seen. The airfield tenants had a meeting with Stratford District Council earlier this week.
The tenants also plan to appeal the judgement regarding the extension of their tenancies, otherwise they must vacate by the middle of October.

Let's hope engaging Stratford council again produces some results - they've been great so far, but it's a big leap from voting through a planning restriction, to actually approving and then funding a CPO.

I think we all hoped this threat to XM655 had gone away, but seemingly not!

Seems Straford District Council have put their money where their mouth is and have begun the process of a Compulsory Purchase Order : https://www.stratford.gov.uk/news/press ... tem/136611

Do not think this was speculation. It could be on Dans podcast from the horses mouth.
Not got the time at present to search through the many Q&As. Thou im sure its been written down a few times.in the past.

Great news that Stratford-upon-Avon council are prepared to give it a go!

Based on what SouthendNick said, there will be a lot of obstacles to overcome, but who knows what will happen.... :dunno:
