Had a good chat with some Tornado ground crew at RIAT, he said they’re dropping to 9 airframes in (or by) October, he was also hoping for a retirement event around then too

I think there is some wrong info somewhere. Today I saw an uncoded GR4 that is apparently ZA543 (036), and the airframe ZA473 should have been coded 032. It is also still showing as active on the updated list at the start of the thread.

Can anybody confirm that the 'RTP' process is complete for the remaining Tornado jets? From now forward the retired jets will be merely scrapped as a whole, or perhaps a lucky few presented for preservation? :dunno:

No sadly its not complete, they are doing the RTP at both Leeming (but not flying anymore into it) And now also at Marham.

Spares are spares. And as for how many more survive.....

The plan is to go down to under 20, that includes the 7 or 8 in Cyprus. So if there are 24 left. At least another 4 still to be withdrawn

Have any plans or rumours ever circulated about any being kept or bought and kept in a flying condition? I was thinking HAA or even Qinetic? Or if one might go to Bruntingthorpe as a taxi runner?

Nope, by all accounts the spares are being sold to the other operators. Rumours say the final lot will be sold and flown to Saudi

Damn! This is hurting my head? I've seen a shot of this airframe at Marham allegedly on the 14th August 2018 :dizzy:

All jets withdrawn enter the RTP process at Marham now. So could have been being towed to wait it's fate. Reported WFU from 24/07. Last flight appears to be the RAF 100 flypast

Thanks for clarification that RTP is also at Marham. I took 'another one gone' too literally! Still slightly bemused why they bother with engine-runs on a jet that isn't 'sold, running & driving'. Possibly they're mandated to do anti-det' runs right up to when the jet's in pieces?

Probably just an Monthly Det run whilst it is still in one piece to make sure all is working ok.

We've had that one through the Selkirk to Moffat valley twice this week. Unfortunately it didn't make use of the 100 ft min.

Didn't that one perform the Sunday 617 flypast at RIAT this year?

The number left is getting close to the final number the RAF want still active at retirement. So shouldn't loose too many more
