Farnborough Black Shed
For those interested, who may have, for instance, seen RAFAT lined up against the black background of its doors during past Farnborough International Airshows: the Black Shed is in the process of being pulled down. I guess nothing lasts forever.
Re: Farnborough Black Shed
So the fact that it's grade II listed hasn't saved it then?

Apparently not. When Dave and I were coming back from Portsmouth yesterday a digger was pulling the roof down.
Edit: Hang on. What we have always thought of as The Black Shed is apparently just "A Black Shed". From internet images The Black Shed appears to be a different building (G29) and I'm not sure where that is on the Farnborough site. I'm still a bit sad to see the big black hangar go: its been there all my life....

Does it ever?
It doesn't here in Wales, anyway - things either get demolished/chopped down 'by mistake, honest' or the developers will get authorisation to do so despite public objections.

Grade 2 listing does not block demolition, it just means there are more hoops to jump through, to get permission to demolish it.

In Scotland we seem to have 'mysterious' fires, when planning permission isn't granted. Resulting in the remains being demolished and planning permission then being granted.

They are pulling down A-Shed (the RAE hangars were lettered), built in 1939 and not listed. This is the one opposite the end of runway 25. It is to be replaced by a massive Gulfstream Service center about three times the size. The black shed/G29 is not far away and on the permiter road by the back of the museum. This is pre WW1 and is listed. The only old hangars left are N and O shed that are used by TAG maintenance

Thanks Rob. I have very clear pictures in my head of Farnborough present and past but know much less of the background.

Lost count of the number of sites in Dundee that now have houses on them after the fire! Latest one though has just by-passed the fire part and just pulled it down anyway!
However, glad to see that the Black Shed appears to have survived and other areas are being redeveloped for aviation.
Arabest,

So the last thing that gave Farnborough its Farnborough-ness has gone. Sad to see it look like a corporate business hub with a runway...

At least its still an airport. And seemingly thriving as such. When MOD(PE) pulled out I thought it might go for housing/industry.
