Note the Tunnan substituting for the Draken. No complaints from me, I've never seen a Tunnan display before.

ok, so no Draken, but as i've never seen a Tunnan display, it will be a first for me, although i did see one fly out of Fairford back in the day.

Mmmmmmmm, probably not. Lansen in 1994 maybe? Tunnan displayed at Waddo in 2013 for anyone who was there.

Quite right and i stand corrected in the most delightful way as i have never seen a Tunnan fly then.
Thanks for the correction and i'm now looking forward to southport even more.

Re: Southport 2019
Will the heavy metal for the show be operating from Liverpool JLA again?
Re: Southport 2019
Thinking of heading up for this, been warned off taking the car in and getting the train is there any station nearby that people have driven too and got the train in? Thanks

The traffic can be challenging.
I always use the train for Southport. I think how comfortable an experience that is depends on the line/direction you're coming from. For me, I park at the big park-and-ride station at Hooton on the Wirral. The MerseyRail Wirral line trains are cheap, frequent and long. However there are a lot of stops and a change in Liverpool, so its an hour and a half to Southport from there.
Depending on where you're coming from you may want to park closer, although from the Liverpool direction there's probably not much benefit in driving too much closer, time wise.
Somebody else may be able to help with trains from the East and North. I do know those coming from the Manchester direction can be very crowded.

Re: Southport 2019
Drive to Hunts Cross which is south liverpool.
It's 1 train, and takes you to southport without needing to change, and vice versa.
Parking at Hunts Cross is quite easy and trains are frequent.
Cheaper to buy an 'all zone' saveaway ticket than it is a return to Southport.
Hunts Cross leaves you an easy drive to the M62 and away.
Train travel time around 45 mins end to end.

Who will be doing the same but from Sandhills as i live in Liverpool.

Any idea when the Swedes are due to arrive? Trying to figure out if they’ll do a fuel stop in Newcastle

The Typhoon eh, sounds awesome!
Re: Southport 2019
Currently trying to make a last minute decision if I should head to Southport for one of the days. I was just going to go to Blackpool Airshow this year but the weather wasn't so good to so the least...
Any suggestions if I should book my train tickets for Saturday or Sunday to come down?

Re: Southport 2019
I’ll be attending for the first time this year.
Are tickets required, or is it better to stay out of the ‘main’ area and head elsewhere? I’ll be there both days.
What is it like for photography?

There's nowhere outside the showground where you will get a better view, definitely head inside. You will need a ticket, but not necessarily in advance, it hasn't sold out in previous years, to my knowledge.Touch wood. If you're definitely going, advance tickets will save you a few bob.
Photography? excellent. The light can be challenging, but its worth it.
Check out last year's UKAR review, previous years' photo threads, etc, and you'll get the general idea. Just cross everything for the weather.

Re: Southport 2019
If you want a change of perspective on photographing the show, try the end of the fast passes where aircraft turn to fly back down the flight line.
Train to Birkdale, then head up the long straight road to the roundabout on the sea front.
The raised dunes next to the roundabout make for a perfect raised and free location due to the start of the paid area is immediately to the right of the roundabout.
Google earth to the dunes from the station has a distance of 1.12km
You'd need a 300mm or more though, but otherwise its pretty good.
Distance from the pier to the dunes is 1.8km
However, your not playing with camera settings too much as the light is almost always behind you.
HTH
cheers
Dave

Cheers for the advice chaps! Heading up after work Friday evening so will maybe do the show Saturday and try somewhere different on the Sunday.
One more Q - where are the stalls/displays etc usually located? On the seafront or in an area of their own?
Thanks again!

Re: Southport 2019
Stalls and displays are within the show ground. The layout and set up at Southport is much like an airshow at an airfield, which will make sense when you see it. The geography is such that you can't get that close or much of a view (at show centre) without paying to go in, and once in you have all the usual stalls and ground entertainments on the beach and prom, cars parked on the beach, and an airfield-show style fence crowd line. The sea is miles away, your view is of flat and open sands. There are no bays, cliffs or other features to mess with separation either. Straight crowd line, straight display axis.
Up until the recent past, lighter fixed wing aircraft have operated off the sands; it hasn't happened for a couple of years, but when it does then it very much adds to the effect of being on an airfield with a different substrate

Presume they will head back home after a refuelling stop on Sunday afternoon?
